Lame question about Al Gore's appearance at Moveon...
Edited on Fri May-28-04 12:50 PM by Richardo
Was the hall not air conditioned? I was uncomfortable for him having to wipe his forehead as much as he did. Or was it a by-product of his passionate delivery (The "How dare they...? moment)

I said it was a lame question...

On edit: OK LET ME CLARIFY - THIS IS NOT A CRITICISM....I HAVE NOT HAD ANY GOP KOOL AID. I JUST WONDERED WHY HE LOOKED A LITTLE UNCOMFORTABLE. :eyes: I have NOT heard any RW commentary about his appearance since I tune that crap out.

Look at what I posted immediately after the speech. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=1673883

3. Hey man, I'm totally on board with the substance and posted accordingly...
Edited on Fri May-28-04 12:36 PM by Richardo
...right after it was over. See? --> http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=1673883

But since I came in late I had no context for the appearance.

10. Great
Then lets stop perpetrating the talking points used by the right-wing to discredit it. You'll notice how not much is being said about WHAT HE ACTUALLY SAID. It's all about his "tone", how "unbalanced" it is, and they are trying to link it to Dean's "scream," which was itself ADMITTED media manipulation of the actual event.

4. Now you know why "the scream" is the only thing people remember.
Image trumps content every time. It's bullshit, but there it is.

7. Well, yes
but it's still a valid question. Presentation is just as important as what he said, from the standpoint of how his message might be recieved by the audience. The Nixon Kennedy debates should provide the proof of that.

9. Nixon Debates
I heard an interview of a news producer who was a part of that, and he said he has since felt such shame, as he marked it (correctly, IMO), as the day when politicians decided all they needed to worry about to win was image.

The shallow thoughts indluged in by large portions (if not majorities) of humanity really sickens me.

14. Right
Which is why we should fight like hell to take the topic OFF Gore's "sweatingangerunbalancedDeanlikescream" and insist upon talking about WHAT HE SAID.

5. Have you ever been under stage lights?
It's hot.

Besides who cares? What did you think of what he said?

6. I actually wondered that, too...
Edited on Fri May-28-04 12:34 PM by FleshCartoon
...and decided that it must have been humid and he was wearing a dark suit jacket under lights...blah, blah...

For some reason, I kept thinking of Albert Brooks in Broadcast News.

Truly, at first, before he pulled out the linen napkin to wipe his face, I didn't know that he was perspiring--I wondered why he kept picking at his face.

It was somewhat distracting from the speech, but it was still a kick-ass speech.

11. The Republican Noise Machine is alive and well.
Oh, yes.

I thought the speech was passionate and brilliant. I did not care if he sweated or whatever.

15. I don't care if he sweated either...
...but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that, until I knew that he was perspiring, I was distracted by his constantly touching his face. I honestly thought that maybe something neurological had happened that I didn't hear about.

Once I realized he was hot, I was able to concentrate on the speech again.

12. Same song, same verse--more Goreing by media
The media uses delivery to ignore the content of what Gore says. I have no problem with some criticism of the delivery. That is fair. But to ignore the content of the speech is wrong.

I think that is why Kerry is trying to be careful. He has already been criticized for the lying statement. And I think Daley of Chicago asked Kerry to apologize for his training wheels comment when Bush fell on his bike.

16. He could be like me
After a short stroll on a winter's day, I'll be beaded the instant I step indoors. I sweat that easily.

I've performed under stage lights, they're hot. After every song, I would have to wipe down my guitar neck and strings, dry my hands, and sweep back the hair plastered to my face.

17. I'll bet it was just unusually hot, because...
...Gore never had a problem like that before when giving a speech. That looked like a pretty heavy jacket he had on, possibly a winter suit jacket.

18. I just listened to the speech again. If I delivered that much truth......
I would be sweating, maybe yelling.....or maybe even SCREAMING!

It takes passionate people to get the truth out.

19. Just finished hearing it on AAR!!!
WOW!!! Is there a transcript of it somewhere so we can actually use it for "what" he said vs "how" he said it?

20. Here's a link to it:
http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/WO0405/S00247.htm

While looking around on Google news for this link, after doing a search on Al Gore, I was overwhelmed by all the backlash that has made the news today about this speech.

And now I get the insanity reference.

The problem is, they make a lot of noise--vicious hissing noise. We have statesmen like Gore.

Enjoy the speech--it's a good one and he's certainly not crazy.

Note how we have to link to a New Zealand site for a speech given in our own country.... :grr:
