McCain: Enough Already!!
Please, I've seen enough of McCain's name on DU to assume, if I didn't know jackshit, that he was a Democrat. In fact, he is NOT a Democrat, and never will BE a Democrat. In fact, several other republicans like Chafee and Snowe would be considered closer to being Democrats than McCain.

Can't we CAN McCain's name and the propaganda that he would make a great VP running mate? Can't we stick to *true* speculation about actual Democrats that would certainly be better candidates for the position?

It's appalling that we waste so much time on discussing the potentials of John Kerry and John McCain, regardless of how much we might like McCain as a moderate republican. He is, after all, STILL a republican, regardless of what light some might wish to see him in. Granted, he was given a raw deal in the 2000 primary; granted he has stood up to the Bush regime more than once; granted he has scruples whereas the rest of the regime has none--NONE of these things makes him a Democrat in any way, shape or form.

PLEASE, for the sake of all of us, as those who wish to legitimately elect the next president and make it a DEMOCRAT, refrain from continued speculation about the possibilities of electing someone who is NOT a Democratic candidate. McCain could be rewarded for his honesty, integrity and other fine virtues, but not as the running mate for Kerry. When there are SO many fine, upstanding Democratic folk who would certainly hold the ideals of the vice presidency, please let's not waste any more of our passion and energy bringing up McCain as VP.

2. anti McCain threads: Enough Already!
there were plenty of existing threads you could have made this argument in, but you just had to start yet another, didn't you? You're just making what you're complaining about worse

3. I agree
McCain has a few fine qualities, but most of his policies just do not fit in with a progressive agenda.

I am all for making overtures of bipartisanship, but not on the ticket. Not even in the cabinet, for that matter.

Find the middle ground when crafting policy, not in forming tickets.

7. Why talk about McCain
Here's one possible justification; McCain is a name. I agree that he isn't the man for the job, and I think it would be foolish to reach outside of the party for our Veep. If Kerry were to pick McCain, all of a suddent Nadar's comments that Kerry and Bush are the same would make a lot more sense.

Fortunately I don't think Kerry is dumb enough to actually go through with this (although McCain as Secretary of Defense is a possibility.

But that doesn't answer the question of whether it's a good idea or a bad idea to talk about it. One way of looking at it is that the more "drama" we can bring to the Vice Presidential selection, the more press coverage and public attention the Kerry campaign will recieve. Its a way of building suspense and keeping people looking at Kerry (and hopefully looking at the sorts of things he is saying.)

Anyway while I don't think McCain makes a good Veep candidadate or even a good candidate for candidency, I can see some value to talking about it.

Not sure if that makes sense, though.

8. What has made McCain appealing...
is that he represents that increasingly rare species; a Republican of integrity who believes in the Constitution. However, he clearly wants to stay a Republican to try to bring the party back to it's historic roots and it's honor. So we should stop trying to lure him and turn our attention back to the very fine candidates we have in our own party.

9. Really get a grip
It is sad to think that we can't think of a good liberal Democrat in the entire United States????? Come on try harder, I think we can.

We have to consider bringing the Democratic Party yet further to the right?????? This man goes on and on and on defending the Bush Administration. By the time the election comes Kerry could run with an actual turd as a VP running mate and win. That said provided we make sure our votes are counted. Go here to sign the petition to verify ALL votes, and pass it on to everyone you know. We can not let Diebold decide the election.

13. oh yeah, hes republican BUT
hes one of the only sane ones left ;)

so while I dunno about the VP spot, i do think we should work closely with people like McCain whod like to see his party return to the real republicans. its nice he realises this administration are goons!

14. NO NO NO!
This bad idea probably flows out of our ABB desperation. McCain could bring a lot of folks from the other side of the fence, but at what cost? We have seen the steady rightward slide of our party, we do not want this.
