NTY|LTTE: "This is not patriotism; this is disaster"
several good letters re: Bush's speech, Iraq. a few snips:

This is not patriotism; this is disaster

===
What is "epic" about this administration except its remove from reality?

===

On June 30, "the occupation will end"! (But our troops will stay.) Iraq will be given "full sovereignty"! (But the new Iraqi government will have no control over American military decisions for Iraq.) The Coalition Provisional Authority will end! (But its hand-picked ministers will continue following the authority's policies.) Iraq will have "democracy"! (But Iraqi citizens will not initially choose their own president, vice presidents or any member of their government.) And Abu Ghraib will be torn down! (And a new high-security prison will be built in its place.)

And they lived happily ever after.

===

This nation does not need more speeches dictating ill-conceived policies. We need public debate and discussion. We need the president to hold news conferences that allow us to ask specifics, to challenge his assumptions and ultimately to be convinced that the plan is sound.The answers may be difficult and uncomfortable for the president, but surely after 14 months the answers exist?

8. The answers are easy but we don't want to hear those answers
We invaded iraq for oil and to create a permanent base to act as a toehold while we invade and steal oil from the other oil-rich countries in the area.

9. Wow, leesa
That's the most concise and blunt statement of the US policy regarding the Middle East I have seen.

What do you think would happen if Bushco admitted that plan? Sadly, I believe many Americans would be okay with it. :(
