The truth behind *'s excellent adventure on Capitol Hill
May 31 issue - As David Hobbes saw it, Republicans in Congress needed cheering up and a call to unity. The news had been a cavalcade of Mesopotamian gloom, clouding the popularity of their leader, George W. Bush, and his party. As the president's legislative adviser, Hobbes suggested Bush do something he rarely does: pay a visit to the Capitol.

In a closed-door, no-questions pep talk, Bush bragged about the economy and vowed the time was near when the Iraqis would "take the training wheels off" and pedal on their own to democracy. "I'm going to win this November," he added. Bush got standing ovations. Departing attendees uttered upbeat sound bites. But privately, some were dismissive. "It was a forced group hug," said one, with "little substance—and no chance for feedback." As for unity, that didn't materialize last week, either. Not long after the president left, the Senate failed to pass the budget Bush wanted—because four Republicans made it clear they were ready to vote no.

I still think the purpose of the visit was to convey that the fix is in
for the November election. And I think that the disparaging comments by Republicans are just a ruse.

Fascists (think Mussolini and Hitler) do NOT relinquish power until they are dead.

3. No, I think it's something more pathetic: self-delusion
To give Bushco so much credit that they could actually get away with that again is not as likely as it is that Bush and his pals are simply assailing windmills.

2. well, what did they expect?

No questions, no feedback, no discussion. We've seen how "stay the course" has worked for Chimpy and this was just an opportunity for him to tell his Repug allies to trust him while they sink deeper into the quicksand.

See, a real President would have taken questions.

4. Bragged about the economy ~ Do you think Republicans believe his lies?
He lies about everything. Are Republicans so gullible that they actually believe him or do they just nod their head and do what they want to anyway? They truly must know that everything he says are lies. The disconnect is unbelievable.
