I still can't get over an article I read which spoke of mass hometown support for this guy. They sure love this sadistic bastard.

2. I would think they don't know the whole story and that they are defending

their town rather, because he's going to stigmatize the entire town he comes from with this. Right now, there is shock which breeds anger and a lack of reflection. Give them time. Besides, I saw people in the towns of these people saying it wasn't right. Stigmatizing the whole town is unfortunate. Think of your next door neighbor being one of these and think about how it would make your whole town look bad.
That's what's at work here too.

I'm in the general area, and the only thing I've heard about hometown support was for Sivits, not Graner. Not saying I'm the final word on this, but it's on the news a lot around here, and it's been basically Sivits, not Graner, whose got the big hometown crowd.

...when reporters from urban areas go out to small towns. They encounter a bunch of freeper "Real American" types (jesus, what is it with the media and that stupid stereotype?) and they just assume that the noisy freepers represent all people from the town, because all people from small towns are the same. It's part of the same Media Reductionism Stupidity Field that results in all anti-war protesters being portrayed as either stoned hippies or violent anarchists.
