Uncle Sam Bans Gay Sperm Donors

The US government said it would ban homosexuals from making anonymous donations to sperm banks, in the name of preventing transmittable diseases, in a move swiftly condemned by gay rights groups.

New Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites) rules that take effect May 25 require agencies that collect tissues or cells including sperm to ask the donor if he has had sex with men or used injectable drugs in the past five years. If the answer is affirmative in either case no donation is allowed.

The FDA says the rules are just an extension of procedures already in effect for donating blood or organs.

"This new rule was developed with input from many concerned consumers, associations and tissue establishments. In all cases, we carefully considered the comments we received in the proposed rule and made changes in the final rule when the science supported the change," said Acting FDA commissioner Lester Crawford.

the red cross asks you if you've had gay sex before they take your blood. Maybe the logic is faulty but it's faulty in lots of places.

But aren't there more straight men out there with STDs(including HIV/AIDS) than gay men with STDs? Why don't they just do a blood test on ALL sperm donors to determine who has STDs and who doesn't?

But this time only for Gabe Asher : my post was sort of sarcastic - and then not - because I believe "gay" is a born with trait for 90% of gays - and the Bush no gay sperm ranks up there with Bush's other very very stupid ideas.

The current rule - after hitting the gov sites - does not appear as stupid as the original post - it is simply a "dangerous activity" question (as with donating blood) that starts a HIV test before the sperm is used. While HIV affects non-gays more than gays - as a percentage of the population it is higher in the gay population. But why not just test for HIV on all donations?

...that donors undergo rigorous testing BEFORE they are allowed to donate, AND, after donating, the sperm is quarantined for a minimum six months. After six months, the donor must come back and be retested and come up negative again on all tests before the sperm is released from quarantine. If they come up positive for anything, the specimen is discarded.

Also, ALL specimens, even from a proven donor, are required to remain in quarantine for six months. Active donors are required to have monthly gonhorrhea testing, quarterly testing for HIV-1/2, HTLV-1/2, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, chlamydia, and CMV.

If HIV is the issue, then it is a false issue. The HIV window period (the time after infection until an HIV antibody test is positive) is one to three months. In 1999, after 14 years of using the HIV antibody test, the CDC could only point to one case of a man who appeared healthy and went beyond this window period. He did not turn positive for 2 years. He was heterosexual and specialized tests conclusively showed he was infected by his wife who was infected by an extra-marital affair.

This is a big steaming load of crap, just another excuse to discriminate.
