Mouseland-- a political fable for us all!
Well, maybe not all of us, working people at least. I'm sure the DLC-types on DU will not be pleased. (Hint: The black and white cats could be interpreted as Dems and Repugs)

To see the animated short go to: http://www.saskndp.com/history/mouseland.html

Text of speech below:

Mouseland
As told by Tommy Douglas in 1944

It's the story of a place called Mouseland. Mouseland was a place where all the little mice lived and played, were born and died. And they lived much the same as you and I do.

They even had a Parliament. And every four years they had an election. Used to walk to the polls and cast their ballots. Some of them even got a ride to the polls. And got a ride for the next four years afterwards too. Just like you and me. And every time on election day all the little mice used to go to the ballot box and they used to elect a government. A government made up of big, fat, black cats.

Now if you think it strange that mice should elect a government made up of cats, you just look at the history of Canada for last 90 years and maybe you'll see that they weren't any stupider than we are.

Now I'm not saying anything against the cats. They were nice fellows. They conducted their government with dignity. They passed good laws--that is, laws that were good for cats. But the laws that were good for cats weren't very good for mice. One of the laws said that mouseholes had to be big enough so a cat could get his paw in. Another law said that mice could only travel at certain speeds--so that a cat could get his breakfast without too much effort.

All the laws were good laws. For cats. But, oh, they were hard on the mice. And life was getting harder and harder. And when the mice couldn't put up with it any more, they decided something had to be done about it. So they went en masse to the polls. They voted the black cats out. They put in the white cats.

Now the white cats had put up a terrific campaign. They said: "All that Mouseland needs is more vision." They said:"The trouble with Mouseland is those round mouseholes we got. If you put us in we'll establish square mouseholes." And they did. And the square mouseholes were twice as big as the round mouseholes, and now the cat could get both his paws in. And life was tougher than ever.

And when they couldn't take that anymore, they voted the white cats out and put the black ones in again. Then they went back to the white cats. Then to the black cats. They even tried half black cats and half white cats. And they called that coalition. They even got one government made up of cats with spots on them: they were cats that tried to make a noise like a mouse but ate like a cat.

You see, my friends, the trouble wasn't with the colour of the cat. The trouble was that they were cats. And because they were cats, they naturally looked after cats instead of mice.

Presently there came along one little mouse who had an idea. My friends, watch out for the little fellow with an idea. And he said to the other mice, "Look fellows, why do we keep on electing a government made up of cats? Why don't we elect a government made up of mice?" "Oh," they said, "he's a Bolshevik. Lock him up!" So they put him in jail.

But I want to remind you: that you can lock up a mouse or a man but you can't lock up an idea.

1. Ahhh, "there's no difference"
That worked so well (for the Repukes) in 2000, that many DUers are going to give it another round.

And I just love the politics as an entertaining fairy tale. It really raises the level of intelligent discourse.

2. I've yet to hear any intelligent discourse from you.
Support all Democrats no matter what!

We can't do any better than our political status quo!

The Dems and Repubs are your only choices, resign yourself to that!

Think inside the box!

Elect leaders beholden to the corporate interests!

And don't dare for a second, you ordinary working slobs, get the idea that you can actually run things for yourselves or substantively change our political system!

4. Claiming there's no significant difference between D and R
is hardly "intelligent discourse."

It's a lie.

7. Of course theres a difference
Republicans have balls....Democrats want to have balls and they figure the best way of generating the impression that they do is to act like Republicans! Yep you are so right...BIG difference.

11. You see? Now *THERE'S* "intelligent discourse"
It's the intellectual in me that finds the word "balls" not just appealing, but thought-provoking too.

21. I thought it was the intellectual in you that found
vigilant maintenance of the status quo appealing. The defense of a political ideology which depends on the antithesis of thought no doubt involves quite a bit of deep thinking, relatively speaking. Freepers do allot of it, mental calisthenics which is frustrating and difficult, sort of like sticking your own head up your ass.

PS Lets hear it for CARLOS! Gosh I miss that guy. Whadya say SanghO...give us three cheers!!!!

24. I think there's nothing more intellectual
than repeating slogans like "vigilant maintenance of the status quo" "antithesis of thought" as well as the ever-present comparison to Freepers.

27. Hey, lets let sangh0 hijack the thread by getting suckered into a debate
about his intellectual prowess vs. ours. Sorry sangh0 I just realized how stupid I was being by allowing this debate to continue. From now on, I will be sticking to the subject of this thread. I encourage others to do the same.

10. On issues of democratic governance, corporate influence, trade,
Edited on Wed May-19-04 05:48 PM by bigbillhaywood
state power, and foreign policy, there are more similarities than differences between Ds and Rs.

Are there differences? Sure: Reproductive rights, gay rights, gun control and (to a very limited extent) labor rights.

Sorry, not enough difference in my mind to justify endorsement of our political system's status quo. If you really believe the Democratic Party is the solution to our country's woes (rather than simply the lesser of two evils), that's your cross to bear. But arguing that people who are unsatified with the political status quo (with both the Dems and Repugs) are void of intelligent discourse simply because you disagree with them is ridiculous.

31. Well, at least sangh0's goading got you to say something
rather than the empty "our rulers aren't like us". You've now actually said in what way they're not like us. Saying they're a different species isn't at all constructive on its own.

3. BTW Tommy Douglas the father of Universal Health Care in Canada.
Douglas started his life as a Methodist Minister who lived through the prarie dust-bowls in the 1930's. He went on to become the first socialist Prime Minister of Canada and fought hard to protect unions and bring in universal healthcare.

A Christian minister who fought to improve life for people is my kind of Christian.

What has the "Christian" fundamentalists done in the US to improve healthcare?

p.s. Douglas is the grandfather of Keiffer Sutherland.

16. I have yet to see you explain your views in more than one
sentence, sangh0. Therefore I am left with impression that you have absolutely NO interest in reforming our political/economic system beyond getting Democrats elected (very visionary stuff). You apparently believe our system is basically good and not in need of structural reforms.

Furthermore, you never bother to flesh out your positions or explain/argue for those positions. It's always a sentence or two. So tell me, sangh0, why should I try to engage in "intelligent discourse" with someone who has no interest in having a serious discussion on these topics?
