Newsweek: Bush Admin=WAR CRIMES PROSECUTION!
Edited on Mon May-17-04 09:48 PM by Beetwasher
Memos Reveal War Crimes Warnings

Could Bush administration officials be prosecuted for 'war crimes' as a result of new measures used in the war on terror? The White House's top lawyer thought so

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4999734/

Comment: Ok, so I'm a bit hyperbolic, but that's the symbolic gist as far as I'm concerned. I'm DAMN ECSTATIC this is being framed like this and is being addressed in the mainstream media. I mean holy fuck!

Bush/Prosecuted/war crimes!!!

Yeah, I know, it's only and online exclusive, but I'll take it!!!

Damn, I think this is a friggin' corner that's been turned!

1. Don't forget the Senate passed a measure allowing us to invade...
the Netherlands...obviously they knew this was coming but did nothing.

Vote Kerry!

perhaps we're more lost than we realized.

18. What do you me we? ~ You have worms in your pocket?
We seek justice. Conservatives get their joy from killing people we get ours from seeing those people brought to justice.

20. Would you be happier if those who ordered the torture
get away with it?

I would like to see them all in jail, all the way up to the top. Perhaps it would discourage those who would think about doing this again.

4. Time for each of us to get our congress critters on the record:
either you are for war crimes or you impeach the whole junta. Use that same 'For us or agin us' sort of black and white shit the neocons are so fond of framing questions in.

Any Congressman who stands for any US government officials to plan, condone, order or in any way, allow violations of the Geneva Convention is contributing to the likelihood of US Military Personnel being abused, tortured or killed. Said Congressmen should also be impeached.

No gray area on this one. The buck DOES NOT stop with enlisteds and low level officers.

9. Read the PDF of the Memo

Jan. of 2002, Powell was still trying to be the Sec. of State. He advised shrub that they should at least determine GPW status on a case by case basis. White House remained "unconvinced" of Powell's argument. Shrub's lawyer does warn of conciquences such as:

"Our position would likely provide widespread condemnation among our
allies and in some domestic quaters, even if we make it clear that we
will comply with the core humanitarian principles of the treaty as
a matter of policy."

"...may encourage other countries to look for technical "loopholes" in future conflicts to conclude that they are not bound by GPW either"

"Other countries may be less inclined to turn over terrorist or provide legal assistance to us"

"A determination that GPW does not apply to al Qaeda and the Taliban could undermine US military culture which emphasises maintaining the highest standards of conduct in combat, and could introduce an element of uncertainty in the status of adversaries."

Remember...this was written in January 2002 by WH legal council Alberto Gonzales

10. The PDF's are very interesting, especially Powell's...
he is definitely trying to warn them off, pretty well calls out Gonzales for misleading the President.

12. Well they ARE war criminals.
Once I just wanted them removed from office, now I want them brought to justice and made to pay for what they've done. Nothing less will satisfy me.

13. When an article is an "online exclusive", do the mainstream...
media, ie NYT, LA Times, etc, pick up on them? I think this article is dynamite, especially with the PDFs included and am wondering if we will see anything in the other mainstream media picking up on this.

21. And the answer will be that they are "innocent".
This feels like a preemptive strike. I predict that, like the 911 hearings, everyone will come out squeeky clean. And as long as the media makes the decision for us, then the people will follow in a trancelike state.

I am so utterly cynical about any justice in this country. I mean with Limbaugh versus Chong versus Janklow, I don't see any justice. Millions of nonviolent noncriminals in jail after decades of bullshit so-called war on drugs. Bla bla bla, time for breakfast. How concerned can one get for a country that is determined to selfdestruct?
