Sarin Nerve Agent Bomb Explodes in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A roadside bomb containing sarin nerve agent exploded near a U.S. military convoy, the U.S. military said Monday. Two people were treated for ``minor exposure,'' but no serious injuries were reported.

``The Iraqi Survey Group confirmed today that a 155-millimeter artillery round containing sarin nerve agent had been found,'' said Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, the chief military spokesman in Iraq. ``The round had been rigged as an IED (improvised explosive device) which was discovered by a U.S. force convoy.

``A detonation occurred before the IED could be rendered inoperable. This produced a very small dispersal of agent,'' he said.

The incident occurred ``a couple of days ago,'' he said.

4. It has alrready been stated that this was probably from
the Iran/Iraq war. It was an extremely old shell, and the people who set it probably did not know what it contained.

It amazes me how much they are making out of this...

This comes as no suprise to me. Saddam was a bad guy and even if this was from Iraq/Iran era, he told the world it was all destoyed. It wouldnt suprise me if he did try to keep his WMD but I think he was lied to about the degree that they had them.

Reagan's administration sold it to Saddam during covert support of Iraq in their war against Iran.
Here is Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam during the Reagan administration's covert support of Iraq.

25. What "we" are you referring to? Refer to Bush's WMD definition
The claim has been that Bush lied. He said there were 500 tons of sarin and nerve gas not to mention other WMD. This discovery still does not prove Bush's definition of WMD.

69. You do understand the concept of before and after right Slaughterhouse?
We have no idea when this mine arrived in Iraq. This is not justification for the war. This so far can only be classified as results of war. If after we investigate we find out that this is part of a cache of weapons that Saddam had hidden then we can consider it as a mark in the justification for war (and even then it may not suffice).

So just stop hopping up and down in joy. Take a breath. And lets figure out what this is really about.

Compared to having the whole planet hate us because we tried to steal an oil country based on a case built on lies?

Compared to taking a vacation for a month when your national security apparatus is running around with it's hair on fire because they think the terrorists will attack any day? (and did?)

Compared to threatening the US economy by incurring so much government debt we might not be able to pay it off for decades?

Compared to rolling back environmental regulations on poisons like arsenic in our drinking water for the sake of corporate campaign contributions?

Bah!

30. Got Them From Us
Most of that stuff was sold to them by us. We could have just used one of our left over shells, or it could have been one that the Iraqis had. It still came from us and would not have been there if Cheney and friends ahd not sent it there. Notice how it happened days ago. It blew up and there is nothing to check.
These are the same people that fired a rocket into a crowded marketplace to see how many civilians they could kill after Sharon complained that we weren't killing enough civilians. They lied about doing it and Robert Fisk found a part of the rocket with our military lot numbers on it. When asked about it they lied for months saying that they were investigating and then just said that they never bothered to investigate it. The military has zero crdibility and there is nothing they can say that I would ever believe.

36. No, I don't think this was planted, but listen to David Kay-MSNBC
He just said this was an old shell from before 1991, probably 1988. The Iraqi's didn't mark their weapons as to which contained gas and which didn't. Of all the thinks we need to worry about in Iraq, thes shells aren't near the top of the list. We need to be much more concerned about mortars, and rockets that may have gas in them.

Yes, this is a very small check mark in the Bush column, but certainly not even close to the hundreds of tons they claim to have KNOWN were there.

I'm originally from Virginia. They still make and sell moonshine in Virginia, West Virginia, and the rest of the South. There's still quite a few ATF agents working moonshine production cases. They still run PSAs on broadcast outlets in the area telling people not to drink moonshine because of the danger of heavy metals poisoning. There's still plenty of emergency room cases every year of the dumbasses that did drink it and got seriously ill.

Sounds like you have reading difficulties. It was a joke about a convention in W. VA. Doesn't a convention imply people from around the country coming from outside the state to a site in W. VA?

Was it a joke about Freepers? Yep. Was it a joke about freepers marrying their first cousins? Yep. Was it a joke about freepers drinking moonshine (that would be available in W. VA)? Yep.

Was it a joke about W. VA because W. VA was the site? That's your baggage.

:wtf:

and as if i'm not supposed to 'get' the reason for your convention bein' set in my mountains or somethin'? is that an insult to my intelligence? i'd bet gays would get a joke about a "sodomite" convention in san francisco where they could get married against jebus' will, and give each other interior decorating tips.... i'd bet you could cross the bay and blacks would get a snide ass "joke" about a gangbangers convention in oakland where they could all come to sell and buy food stamps and sample different local crack varieties.... and i bet they would have about as much "fake outrage" at such dicketry as i. stereotypes get old and annoying after awhile of others having fun with them..... and really have no place on a progressive board like that.

52. The question
Edited on Mon May-17-04 11:31 AM by Az
Is not whether such munitions are there now. But very specifically whether they were there when we attacked. And more specifically in large quantities. This is the basis for which we were drawn into this conflict. Later it morphed into stopping the torture and such (good job there).

A detonated sarin gas mine does not constitute evidence of WMDs in Iraw prior to our attack. It will certainly be taken as such by those desperate to justify the attack. But it is simply not valid evidence for justification.

On edit: PS How many progressives use a screen name of a slaughterhouse? Just wanted to ask.

A mine has been found (the hard way) that seems to test positive for sarin gas. There is no link to point of origen for this. David Kay has said several times this morning on CNN and MSNBC that the weapon was from the mid to late '80s. You're living proof that watching Fox causes brain rot.

74. and its not a stockpile....
its one shell!

the administration told congress and the world that they knew Sadaam had tons and tons of chemical agents; they said they knew where they were being stored; they said that Sadaam was not permitting them to check certain sites or playing a shell-game with inspectors, moving things one step ahead of them. well now we have free and unfettered access to go and search anywhere in the country we want, any time we want....more than one year one, where are these stockpiles?

get over it, bushco outright LIED to Congress, the UN, temselves, and the American people.

65. The UN and the US already knew...
...there were 'leftover' shells like this and that some of them contained chemical weapons. But THIS isn't the "WMD" the Bushies said were the REASON for 'his' war.

- Some of you will do anything and make excuses for Bush* the Failure...even lie for him and rationalize the unnecessary death of thousands.

70. admininstration still lied...and we don't look silly at all...
if anything they do. are they really going to try and convince people that this war was worth it because a single shell was discovered? there most certainly is a threshold, especially since the administration took it upon themselves to claim the existence of an arsensal agents and chemicals, and delivery methods that placed the US in immenient danger.

what we have now is the administration saying that one shell, that couldn't reach from Bagdhad to Basar, let alone Boston, with what may be little more than traces of an otherwise readily available chemical agent, amounts to the tons and tons of deadly toxins Sadam was appearently threating us with? c'mon - do you honestly beleive this makes the worth justified?

76. We went to war because of the "45 minute" threat
that Saddam's enormous stockpile of WMD's posed to our precious country, remember? This is like finding a cap gun inside a nuclear warhead.

Face it: the reasons for going to war were exaggerated, the intelligence was doctored, PNAC is a cabal of greedy thugs, the multinationals now have their precious oil and military presence in Iraq, and thousands of US men and women died for this bullshit. Your president is a lame duck.

"Now we look silly...." No, the only person who looks silly around here is the numbnuts freeper who thinks it's a worthwhile pasttime to pretend he's a progressive and insult the intelligence of all the people on this board. Don't you have anything better to do? Why don't you go raise hybrid beetles or read some Danny Pipes, fer crissakes.....Or jack off to your copy of "Soldier of Fortune" that just arrived in your mailbox. "WE" hope you'll be leaving now, cuz "WE" are the ones in the right, and "YOU" are fucked in the head.

And please, I REALLY hope, for your sake, that you don't REALLY think that we don't know you're a freeper. I mean, come on! You guys have GOT to start getting a little less transparent if you plan on attacking us.

79. I am ex EOD
According to TV news the soldiers involved were EOD. If they tell me it is nerve gas I might tend to believe them. I will not believe anybody else.

EOD--Explosive Ordnance Disposal.

it could be tested. We'll just take your word for it though, you've been straight up with us all along, so why would we doubt you now.

50. Now they're guilty of plagiarizing a Bruce Willis movie.
This whole "mixing of binary liquids" crap is straight out of Die Hard With A Vengence.

You'd think if they were going to make shit up they'd at least pick a movie millions of people haven't seen before.

54. this is just the beginning..
Bush is feeling the heat...we'll "discover" more..the right wing media will spin for the administration..the fear factor will go into affect... and Bush's numbers begin to climb.

Lets just hope thinking minds prevail here. We knew there were old weapons around.. but thats a far cry from an immediate threat, active weapons programs, supplying the terrorists with WMD's. WE supplied the terrorist with WMD's.. both in the 80's, and now with a total failed policy in Iraq, anything that wasn't destroyed by the inspections is up for grabs by anyone who finds them.

We went to war because we were 45 minutes away from a chemical attack, nuclear attack, and Saddam was supposedly giving arms to terrorists. That has all turned out to be a lie. We have created more terrorists in the last year than we could have ever imagined existing prior to this mess.

Which you seem more than prepared to do. And come up with a new subject line too. You are being pedantic.

73. Take the evidence as it is
Do not embelish it. Do not make presumptions. Follow the evidence and if you hit a wall you must hold off on drawing conclusions until you can find a way through it or around it.

We have possible evidence of the presense of sarin gas in a mine. This is all we know at this stage. We do not know who planted it. We do not know where it came from. We do not know if there is more.

Until we know more this is just a red flag. Something to take note of and examine deeper. Some will wave the red flag around to excite those who are eager for such things. A reasoned approach will resist such emotions and instead focus on what we can determine currently.

72. One doesn't need to 'spin' the truth...
...and the truth is the whole world already knew about the existance of these aged shells. Yet...the Right stretches the finding of a shell or two as justification for the death of American soldiers and thousands of innocent Iraqis. How does the Right live with themselves? Have you no conscience?

77. David Kay says it has been there since late 80's
Edited on Mon May-17-04 11:50 AM by vetwife
Kay said this is not the smoking gun. This was used during the Iran-Iraq conflict. Been there since late 80's and just lying around. Not marked. Most was gotten in 96.

82. CHECK OUT THESE HEADLINES
BBC 'Nerve gas bomb' explodes in Iraq

CNN Artillery round in Iraq emits sarin gas, U.S. military says

DRUGE Roadside bomb containing sarin nerve agent explodes in Iraq...

MSNBC Bomb containing deadly sarin explodes in Iraq

FOX Chemical Weapons Found in Iraq

Not trying to minimize this but that is a totally misleading headline from FOX. Nobody "found" anything and apparently they were old shells

83. old shells
that were supposed to be destroyed according to Saddam. Just pointing this out. This is a far cry from the stockpiles that I believe were sold to America as justification for the war. I think its safe to say there are some "WMD" in IRaq, not anywhere close to the amount or capability of what we were told and what the world thought.
