I have received three solicitations from these thugs.
The first was in a mailing from Musical Heritage Society. I was shocked, to say the least. This is a company that sells classical music CD's and I have spent big $'s with them (and received wonderful; CD's). I immediately called. They were apologetic, and said that this solicitation in no way reflected their political views; in fact there were no corporate political views. They had contracted with a group that provided inserts, and this lowered mailing costs. I canceled my membership (regretfully, because I LOVE their offerings) but I had to make a statement. I also asked if others had canceled, and they said yes. I have since received two letters expressing hope that I will reconsider. I may, but I doubt it.
The second solicitation was from BMG and I canceled them as well.
The third is more understandable. I am a stamp collector. Now SC's are a very conservative lot, being mostly aging white men, usually xtians, but with a large group of Jews. Whether the Jewish collectors are conservative, I don't know, but the xtians sure are. There is a periodical, and I wont be more specific, because of what follows. In this periodical, which I have subscribed to for a SIGNIFICANT number of years, there is a letters column. Collectors write in about their concerns. About 95% of these letters are negative. The sorry state of the USPS, the awful stamps being issued, etc. For many of these years I read these letters to my mother and we just shake our heads at the whining going on. I mean, this is a hobby; it's supposed to be FUN. These people need to get a life. The vituperative diatribes against the Breast Cancer Awareness stamp is a good illustration. A little background: this was the first US stamp that cost more that the 'face value', i.e. the amount that paid for postal duty. I cost First Class Postage, plus an amount that brought up the cost to the next 5c's: if FCP were 33c (amount when stamp introduced, then the cost was 40c. The difference, less administrative costs, was given to various organizations to promote cures and detection. This brought the moles from the earth. There were at least a year's worth of hateful letters, usually more than half the total just SCREECHING (if written words can have a sound in your ear) about the unfairness, the cost, the politically correct motivations of the sponsors (Hillary got the blame). You can't believe the things said about the Freida Kali stamp. Mind-boggling, the hate. Same for the Aid (Mosley festival) stamp. At first there were screams about the Chinese New Year stamps, Kwanzaa. The editorial policy promotes this. Angry articles about the same things. So I was not surprised to see this solicitation as an centerfold insertion. Now I don't remember many solicitations before this one (I think history book club) so this is really pretty exceptional. So I called the editor. He was nasty from the start, as soon as he heard my complaint. Entirely unapologetic, what's wrong with you for complaining, we're only trying to lower YOUR subscription costs. I was not surprised at his mean response. When I told him that I was going to contact the advertisers and complain to them, he said that I must have lots of Timon my hands, said HE was a busy man, and hung up. A total jerk. I have canceled that subscription, and BTW WITHOUT ANY sadness.
