My Letter to Senator Inhofe

Dear Senator Inhofe,

Your remarks on the Senate floor regarding your "outrage at the outrage" shows that you've really missed the boat on the Abu Ghraib abuses.

That the soldiers who committed these abuses were Americans and the prisoners were Iraqis is completely beside the point.

The point of the outrage is that we as a society do not condone torture, nor do we support those who commit it. We do not condone the torture and abuse of those who are incarcerated in the United States, and likewise, we do not tolerate it being done to those who are prisoners of the U.S. abroad.

Your insinuation that we should support the thugs and abusers of Abu Ghraib Prison simply because they are Americans and their victims are not, is the worst sort of morally bankrupt jingoism.

Americans of conscience everywhere are shocked by the despicable behavior of the soldiers at Abu Ghraib, and rightfully so. We love our country and will never support ruthless and criminal acts being done under its banner. That's not what America is about.
