Praising Rumsfeld under these circumstances
The president emphasized that the controversy over Iraqi prisoners came while "our troops continue to face serious danger. And this government is giving them every means of protecting themselves and every means necessary to gain victory."

Seems to me that, as one astute Senator mentioned that the permissiveness of lawlessness lead to this torture problem hit the nail exactly on the head. And even today "giving the Army every means necessary" just gave them further permission to do whatever they feel they should do.

Every means necessary to win the war...torture, murder, abuse, rape...yep those must be winning solutions alright - and under these atrocities, Bush praises Rumsfeld for a job well done....unbeleivable. When it came to this administration, in the 3 1/2 years of office, my feelings for them began as wariness, which led to distrust, disappointment, concern, alarm, outrage and now fear...fear of what we are embracing/allowing/encouraging to "win".

1. What's sad
Is that once again we find ourselves in a war that we don't really understand what victory will look like. I mean that was one of the lessons of vietnam was that if we are going to commit our troops to the field we need to have a good idea of what victory is and how we can achieve it.

Apparently our leaders believed that knocking down Saddam Hussein would have ended the war immediately, and we'd be loved. That seemed a bit fishy before the war, but now it seems clear that they totally believed it.

Cause, you know, if they had thought that we might face a year or more of Iraqi insurgancy, they would have come up with some sort of system for detaining prisoners instead of just letting it evolve (or devolve) from conditions on the ground.

But then, so many things would have been different if they had spent a few minutes thinking it through.

2. Praising Rumsfeld is thumbing his nose at Poppy
yet again.

How much safer the world would be if Poppy and Babs had been better parents.

Bush Family Values and the legacy of hatred on the world stage.

4. Yet another commonality with Hitler and the Nazis
Loyalty to monsters no in spite of the capability to commit atrocity, but BECAUSE of it.

I would expect no different behavior from Bush regarding Rumsfeld as I would Hitler regarding Von Ribbentrop or Stalin regarding Molotov.

7. I couldn't believe this quote.
"One difference between democracies and dictatorships," he said, is that free countries confront such behavior "openly and directly."

That pretty much sums it up, alright. This, after these neofascists completely ignored the Red Cross abuse reports for nearly a year. Seriously, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
