Let's cut to the chase here about these prisoner tortures, folks, and who is responsible.
Here is my stance: Any and every individual who in any way contributed to the attempt to link and/or equate Saddam and the Iraqis to the events of 9/11 bear direct responsibility for these crimes of prisoner torture.
As an ex-Marine and Vietnam vet, it is my experience that contrary to what some believe, young men and women in the Armed Forces don't actively look forward to killing and/or mistreating innocent individuals, or even enemy soldiers. But they do see themselves as the "protectors" of America and if they can be convinced that the indicated "enemy" has attacked or threatened America (remember "we are fighting the communists in Saigon so we don't have to fight them in San Francisco" during Vietnam?), they do look forward to extracting payback and evening the score.
The American troops in Iraq have been convinced (as have many non-military Americans) that Iraq was at least part of, if not behind, the events of 9/11. The pictures of the mistreatment of prisoners is evidence, in my opinion, of attempts at revenge for 9/11.
Voltaire said it plainly: "Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities."
