This bozo is completely serious, the author is actually named Joseph Lieberman, a teacher at a Brooklyn yeshiva and his wife name is Hadassah. According to the athor: 'My name and my wife's name are what they are, because God wants me, a conservative Republican, to take on the liberal Democrat publicly.'

8. Worst book I ever read

I think it was called "Head of State". Anyway, it was about a plot to bring down the Soviet Empire by stealing Lenin's stuffed head. I couldn't stop reading because I kept thinking, no it can't be this stupid - but it was.

Incidently, I read a great short story recently. I like alternative histories. This one was called "Southern Strategy," and was by Michael Flynn, who I know nothing about.

Anyways, the story takes place in occupied Alabama in the 1950's, and the main character is Adlai Stephenson. It seems the US never got into WWI, the war ended in a negotiated peace led by a League of Nations that became strong enough to police the world. This led to the League's intervention in the south to stop the "cleansing" going on by the Ku Klux Klan of the "colored Americans". Alabama is in the German zone of occupation led by General Rommel (the Jungle Rat) so named because of his victory over the Japanese in the Philippines. Also a Jewish German occupation officer, Goldberg is assasinated by US terrorists trying to end the German occupation.

George Wallace leads the white terrorists, and is a rival to Leiutenant Governor Tallulah Bankhead. Martin King leads the black terrorist group fighting from the rubble of their burned out ghettos. Adlai Stevenson has been sent down south by the Democratic Party to try to end the fighting so the party can be united in the upcoming presidential elections.

He sends notes to both sides through a teenager named Elvis, and the news is delivered over radio by Dutch Reagan.

Trying to thwart Stephenson's mission is a mysterious spy named Tricky Dick. He ultimately wins when Rommel is killed and Tricky Dick puts Stevenson in position to suffer for it.

There's some funny lines in the story.

King says they can have his gun when they tear it from his cold dead hands.

Rommel looks for a final solution to the redneck problem.

Rommel won't allow smoking in his presence because of an anti-smoking activist from Austria who's the best speaker he ever heard in his life.

Young Elvis tells of the shootout that finally got Wallace. He took a bullet right in the spine. You should have seen him twist and shout. He said kid, you won't have George Wallace to kick around any more.

Not exactly war and Peace, but wonderfully well written, and the last few paragraphs are so well written I read it over and over.

I guess he point is that situations make the man.
