The Jesus Factor tonight on Frontline
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/jesus/

As an evangelical Christian, President Bush has something in common with the 46 percent of Americans who describe themselves as being "born again" or having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Often has the president recounted praying about major decisions facing the nation--but what do we actually know about the rudiments of George Bush's faith? To what extent do the president's spiritual beliefs impact or influence his political decision-making? And how closely do Bush's religious views mirror those of the country's burgeoning--and politically influential--evangelical movement?

1. Heard this discussed on Fresh Air
and it troubled me a great deal. What I gathered from listening to the producer of this program and another fellow who wrote a book about Bush, evangelical thought is taking over things. They said that some Jewish members of the Administration felt uncomfortable because there was an impression that you got in Bush's good graces by attending Bible study classes. And some ministers apparently are loving the Iraq war because they see it as a chance to destroy Islam and convert the Arabs to Jesus, whom they call God.

Don't get me wrong-I'm a spritual person. I do try to live my faith. My contacts with whatever is beyond this life has made me try to become more tolerant and more helpful to all people. I guess what bothers me about Bush is that, if indeed he has heard from God, his actions don't appear to show it.

4. There is some hope, then
"some Jewish members of the Administration felt uncomfortable "

What the evangelicans here don't see, is that they are not different from what we call radical Muslims. Both groups claim that their god is on their side and therefore there is no room for rational debate, for a compromise for apologies - that some attacked Bush appearance a few weeks ago.

Whether it is Limbaugh with his dittoheads or Bush, people who are so sure about everything that they are doing and saying are dangerous.

3. A flashback
I don't care if it rains or freezes,
Long as I got my plastic Jesus,
Sittin' on the dashboard of my car.

7. It will be too scary to watch a second time
It is hard to believe that he can get away with it - mingling church and state and, frankly, not knowing what he is talking about.
