A Letter to my Republican Fundy Friend
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 02:55 PM by Ladyhawk
This is it: my attempt to wake someone up. I hope it helps. :(

-------------------------------

Hi (Name Removed),

This is the last I'm going to say on the subject because I know it's a touchy one. Yet I feel for the sake of America's future, for the sake of your children, you need to look into this. You are being lied to. The American press is largely controlled by a few corporations due to deregulation under the Clinton Administration. Leaders of the Christian Coalition use George W. Bush's "Christianity" to create blind support for him. Pat Robertson's far right group has poisoned the politics of many American churches. These days, the only way to get a balanced look at what is happening is by reading books and visiting the Internet. Television and newspapers are not reporting the whole truth. Try fair.org, truthout.org and takebackthemedia.com for information on this phenomenon. Also, Al Franken's book, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, goes into great detail, giving statistics that prove the far right has taken over the news media. The misconception that there is a liberal bias in the media, coupled with the truth that there is a right-wing bias in the media, has moved public discourse far to the right, putting America in great danger.

Also, neoconservatives are using "moral" issues like abortion and homosexuality to make themselves appear righteous to fundamentalist Christians. In the meantime, they're robbing us blind and planning to declare war on most of the world. If you still believe in the Bush administration, you are being deceived. The lives of your children are at stake. Even now there is evidence that Bush is planning to reinstitute the draft. (Child's Name), (Child's Name), (Child's Name) and (Child's Name) could all be drafted. I know you love your children. Because you love them, please take another hard look at Bush and his cronies.

In the 1990's a group of people including Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, James Woolsey, Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle, Bill Kristol, James Bolton, Zalmay M. Khalilzad, William Bennett, Dan Quayle and Jeb Bush created a group called "The Project for a New American Century." In their papers, they outlined a plan which would turn the United States into a unipolar power that would invade other countries and set up an American Empire. In one of their major reports, written in 2000, they noted that "the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event -- like a new Pearl Harbor." Conveniently for them, along came 9-11. If you ask me, it was a little too convenient.

There is real evidence that suggests the Bush administration backed off on terrorism, allowing the events of 9-11 to take place. Do a google search on "back off Bin Laden." Read what you find. Then take a look at this story: "In the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks while U.S. airspace was restricted, planes sanctioned by the Bush administration flew about the country gathering some 140 high-ranking Saudi Arabians – including several relatives of al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden – who were then spirited out of the country within a week of the terror."

Considering the news media hasn't adequately covered these stories, it may look like I'm a conspiracy theorist nutjob when I say that the Bush administration may have allowed 9-11 to happen. I've never been one for conspiracy theories, but after reading these news stories and many others--and hearing the testimony of Richard Clarke and others--the facts seem to incriminate the administration. At the very least, the Bush administration is guilty of gross incompetence in their handling of the al-Qaida threat.

Even if you don't buy the theory that the Bush administration may have allowed 9-11 to happen on purpose in order to consolidate power, take a close look at his actions (or rather, inactions) during the 9-11 crisis. Watch this flash. It's incendiary, yet vitally important: True 9-11. After he knew what was happening, Bush continued to read to children, even though only he had the power to order the downing of a commercial airliner. After his totally meaningless photo-op with schoolchildren, he fled like a terrified bunny rabbit in Air Force One. Some hero. (This seems to indicate he hasn't changed much since he went AWOL from the National Guard during Viet Nam.)

Guess which country was first on the PNAC's hit-list? If you guessed Iraq, you just won the $100,000 question! Do a google search on "O'Neill 9-11." Look around. See who else says the plans to invade Iraq were in place before 9-11. The PNAC even tried to get Clinton to invade Iraq before Bush became president. There were no weapons of mass destruction. Those assertions were bald-faced lies. The US News and World Report said, "For six hours that Saturday, the men and women of the Bush administration argued about what Secretary of State Colin Powell should--and should not--say at the United Nations Security Council four days later. Not all the secret intelligence about Saddam Hussein's misdeeds, they found, stood up to close scrutiny. At one point during the rehearsal, Powell tossed several pages in the air. 'I'm not reading this,' he declared. 'This is bulls- - -.'" Apparently, Powell's conscience didn't stand up to the pressure of the Bush Administration.

As for our other "excuse" for invading Iraq: yes, Saddam is an evil man. But there are many evil dictators / oligarchies around the world, including the Saudi Royal Family with whom the Bushes have strong ties. The United States is guilty of supporting brutal regimes around the world, including Saddam's when he was fighting against the Iranians. Back then, Rumsfeld and Saddam were buddies.

The United States actually sold Saddam his weapons of mass destruction, but by the time the invasion of Iraq began in March 2003, the weapons had either been used or dismantled. Do a google search on "United States sold weapons to Saddam." Unfortunately, the United States will support brutal regimes when it's convenient to do so, then turn on them in a heartbeat. This is what happened to Saddam.

The PNAC, now in power through its puppet, George W. Bush, plans to plunge America into a perpetual war, a war that will last decades. In order to pull this off, they will need more soldiers. Considering the "unexpected" quagmire developing in Iraq, they may need more soldiers to simply keep the situation under control. This means a draft.

Articles on the upcoming draft:

Please, please, please take a closer look at this administration. George W. Bush is not a moral man. His cronies are not moral men. They are greedy, lying, murdering men using your faith against you. It is one of the oldest tricks in the book: co-opt the predominate religion and use it to control the masses. I don't know if Bush is serious about his Christianity or not, but he certainly doesn't follow the teachings of Christ. He doesn't love his neighbors. He is extremely greedy. He lies incessantly. He starts wars without good cause. How does this represent humility, meekness and turning the other cheek? Jesus wouldn't be caught in the same room with George W. Bush.

I don't know whether or not you will listen to a heathen like me, but I hope you do. You are the only person I can think of who might listen. You love your children. You don't want any harm to come to them. You're more open-minded than most Republicans I know. The neoconservatives have taken over the Republican party. The PNAC neocons are not true conservatives, either fiscally or morally. Bush has presided over the worst deficits in American history. He has subtly declared greed to be the new virtue, basing all his decisions on what will help the rich get richer. And he wants your children to be cannon fodder so he can accomplish just that. We have to stop him.

Sincerely,

Your Friend Laura

P.S. I don't expect or even want a reply to this message. I felt I had an obligation to let you know what I have learned so that you can work to save America and your children. What you do with this information is entirely up to you. I did my duty. I tried.

15. Thanks Mari
I'm thinking about you and Michael this afternoon. It was watching your struggle that prompted me to write my friend. He really does love his children. He's a fairly innocuous fundy, as fundies go (although part of me is still pissed about the cold-hearted proselytization attempt a few months ago). I don't want to see him go through what you're going through. But he won't listen to me.

7. Be my guest.
The more people who can be persuaded, the better.

Remember, I VOTED for the chimp in 2000. I have now--as Randi Rhodes would put it--stopped drinking the koolaide. I never really thought very much of Shrub to begin with, so it wasn't a complete turnaround. It's going to be hard, if not impossible, to convince true freepers. I think the letter would be wasted on my mother and brother, for example. They agree with the PNAC agenda.

10. Cool...
I have one friend on another chat board who is very Christian (that sounds wrong, but do you know what I mean?), but she is also a fairly intelligent person, and I think with the right info, she may see the light before November.

Thanks! I'll let you know if I get anywhere with that...

I can't imagine that any reasonable, thinking person wouldn't be convinced by your letter. Keep up the good work!

I'm getting such good reviews, maybe I'll turn it into a flyer with a huge title across the top:

9. Here's a great article from Jim Wallis on a Christian site:

Wallis was a guest on Franken's show today. It's long but well worth the read.

12. Here's the reply:
Thank you Laura. I appreciate your concern for me and my family.

(Name Removed)

In other words, "I don't believe a word you just said. God will take care of my family. I can bury my head in the sand."

Sigh. Well, at least I tried.

It sounds like the one I've gotten from the 2 Fundie relatives I have tried to give the little red pill to.
They have to chose to swallow said pill.

But it is ALWAYS worth trying!:(

16. Hmmm
He is extremely greedy.

How so?

He lies incessantly.

I think you would need to provide actual factual data where he lied...otherwise, that accusation isn't believable to a Conservative looking for facts, not conspiracy theories fueled by emotion.

He starts wars without good cause. How does this represent humility, meekness and turning the other cheek?

Being humble, meek, and turning the other cheek doesn't mean you shouldn't fight for what you believe is right.

Sorry, but I would like facts and logic, not emotion and theories.

19. It has been my experience that facts and logic are not that important
I have had many long talks with people about politics/social issues, and one thing I have found is that it doesn't matter what facts you can present, people are not easily swayed from beliefs long held.
It seems that, to me, the most effective route is to portray yourself as open to constructive dialog, and to display respect for the other person's viewpoint. Change must initiate within the individual, and facts can play a role during that change, but they cannot cause it on their own.
The saying, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink," sums up what I am trying to say. I think the letter does a nice job of opening lines of communication between friends. I think LadyHawk wrote very well, and in the next couple of months I hope her friend digests the contents of the letter.

You might try looking around the site before posting something this laughable. The good people here at DU have presented MOUNTAINS of facts regarding the illegitimite boy king currently residing in the White House.
