Why Dean Was Cut!!!
It seems that it really is just a very unfortunate schedule crunch. The forest service is cutting out the last half hour of the event, because it began an hour late.

I pasted the following from http://blogforamerica.com/

"I was shocked and aggravated at first about Dean not speaking, since I waited most of the afternoon also, but that's just sometimes the way these things go, like when the last-scheduled guest is bumped on Letterman. We all feel that Dean was more important, but there were thousands of groups there who wanted their leaders to speak also.

And when they said the park service gave them an extra half hour, that told me that they had to cut at least a half hour's worth of speeches, since the event started an hour late. And when the park service says you leave, you have to leave.

We can all imagine that Howard may have planned to speak for more than three minutes, and rather than expect to bump others for a chance of a few minutes exposure, which he readily gets on network news these days, he probably didn't want to take away these leaders' few minutes to speak after all their hard work for the cause, especially if he had to weigh that against some other event that he had promised to get to."

1. I thought it might be something like that
He did the right thing. He would have been boffo, but it wasn't his march. I hope he posts the text of what he was going to say.

2. Rock groups?
I am sorry, but I think there is more to it than that. He was there from 12 on, and he had been listed as a main speaker. Many of the ones who spoke had not been listed.

4. Usually, you save some of your
biggest stars for the end.

5. But not cut them.
There are times that would be done. This was a little obvious early on that many people were being squeezed in. You don't save your bigger draws until the end and then cut them off. Non productive.

He was a planned speaker, many of the legislators were not. I was glad to see them there, but something does not seem right.

Someone says scheduling conflict. That does not ring true either. One does not go into the midst of a million or more people and be in a hurry to get out. He made the ad for this event with Michelson/Michelman (can never remember her name) on April 15th 10 days ago.

There was chat by him at the NARAL website on that date. This was planned. You don't cut off your top draws, especially one from medical profession who is famous for his pro-choice stances.

Something else happened, and we will probably never know.

8. If the park service say they are shutting you down
because you've run overtime, then you've got to cut somebody.

Definitely sounds like some poor stage managing by the organizers, but even the best managed events run over and sometimes you're stuck with nothing but bad choices. I would assume that the organizers hoped that they could get away with running over and the park service did compromise, which from my personal experience is very unusual.

6. call me a blasphemer, but
I would have been willing to forgo the Anni DeFranco extended bad poetry/out of tune guitar performance, in order to give the time to Dean.

9. I'll second that!
I appreciate her rags to riches, activist, story, but I don't like her music. I've always found her singing and guitar playing style to be pretentious. I am now prepared to be drawn and quartered.

7. Was Kerry there? I heard he would be.

The scheduling excuse sounds phony to me, too. I don't believe for a second that some of the other speakers would have minded stepping aside for Dean. Indeed, that's why I'm asking if Kerry was there.

10. Kerry was not there.
I don't think he was scheduled to be there. God knows he wouldn't want to embarrass himself by being seen with, *gasp*, liberals.

12. Well, as a part-time rock journalist I have to say
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 07:55 PM by rocknation
that if the show has to be cut, the fans will be LESS likely to ask for a refund if you cut the opening acts, NOT THE HEADLINER!!!

13. Even though Dean didn't speak,it was still a hell of a rally
I missed most of my sleeping today and have to go into work in a little while. I was waiting and waiting and waiting for HowDo and must have dozed off for awhile because I missed Annie DeFranco. Glad to hear I didn't miss the Man. It was very heartening to see the young women with so much passion. I was glad they got the chance to sleep, I mean speak, see I told you I haven't had enough sleep.
