Recall the Knights Templar. Google if you have to.

They were common folk recruited across Europe during the Crusades by the Church. Principle task, ride herd on the rich folk going to the Holy Land.

They operated a way station system making the journey much safer.

Over time, many of the wealthy people gave them land and riches in return for lives and property saved by their protective actions.

In France, this land/wealth accumulated to help the returning Knights end their lives in comfort, a reward for services well done.

Somewhere somehow, the ruling class, Church and King, connived to murder the Templars and take over the assets. Moral of the story, Templars got Had.

Fast Forward: Our poor Military, also brainwashed into service, goes off to war, only to see backstabbing, changes, and cuts in benifits.

Templar Knights Part 2.
