Mahmood Mamdani on Bill Moyer's NOW
Moyers is now interviewing Mahmood Mamdani on American occupation policy in Iraq.

He's urging for withdrawal of US troops as only way to start to solve the problems in Iraq. He says there are two types of people in Iraq: those who want to end the occupation and those who want to attack America, and we need to recognize the difference.

He says US cold war policy is what created the climate for terror.

5. that was a great interview
Moyers is able to ask questions for people who have not been following all this for a while...sometimes I think...of course, Mr. Moyers...we KNOW that...

but then I have to realize that most people in America are not obsessed with what has happened in this country for the last three years...

...and then I think....well, why AREN'T THEY...because we are in the big shit since the soft coup.

But I digress...yes, I had already ordered his book, Good Muslim, Bad Muslim, for my store.

I didn't know he was going to be on Moyers, but glad to see he was there. I haven't had a chance to read his book yet, though.

the "facts on the ground" in Iraq are so blatant for anyone to see, who really wants to see what is happening, which bears little to no resemblance to the bullshit Dubya spouted the other night.

I think the most important statement he made was to label Osama's Al Q. movement a POLITICALLY motivated group.

Of course, the background on the mujahadeen was important, as was telling the truth about the cold war being fought in Asia, Africa, and South and Central America.

Come on, America, WAKE UP!

You are being bamboozled by the Bush junta and they are filling their pockets with the blood money of Iraqi citizens and American soldiers.

7. excellent
The book is on my list as well. He explained Sadr was a believer in millennialist Islam, which is similar to our own fundies. It would seem the end of the world for Iraqis after what they have been through. Makes sense why they would be drawn to it.

11. Could we take all the "millenialist" fundies of whatever
denomination and put them on Mars? Then we could blow it up (we're good at that kind of thing, just not good at putting things together).

That way the "millenialists" could all have their Armaggedon and End of the World and Rapture and all that stuff. Right?

10. background on the mujahadeen
But neither mentioned the US support of the mujahadeen or the building of the madrassahs in Pakistan in order to recruit fighters against the Soviets.

And there was no mention of the BFEE involvement with the Bin Ladens or the corporate winners in all of this. The politics does not make sense, really, without the profiteers.
