Great Argument Presented by Roger Ebert....one of the best
bits I've seen in a while. Perhaps Kerry should hire this
guy. He nails it, Hard.

Must read. Damn.

"

Stern belongs on radio just as much as Rush

April 16, 2004

BY ROGER EBERT Advertisement

Like millions of Americans, I listen to Howard Stern on the radio in the mornings. I think he is smart, quick and funny. Sometimes he is ''offensive,'' but to be quite frank, I am not ''offended,'' because what he says falls within the realm of words and subjects that, as an adult, I have long been familiar with even without the tutelage of Stern.

Unlike millions of Americans, I do not listen to Rush Limbaugh on the radio. One reason for that is that I am usually at the movies when he's on the air -- an alternative I urge on his listeners. Limbaugh does offend me when I monitor him, because he has cheapened political discourse in this country with his canned slogans and cheap shots. Once you call a feminist a ''feminazi,'' what else is there to say about feminism....."

It keeps going, great article.

1. fantastic rebuttal to the "it's the public airwaves therefore
we have the right to censor" argument.

4. I caught Stern once in a Taxi cab.
I was offended by the language I heard broadcast over the airwaves. I can understand such language when scrambled so only those people willing to pay to hear it can hear it. But this was uncensored.
I told the driver to change the station. He didn’t. The tip I left was nonexistent.

5. You didn't tip the taxi driver...
...because he had Stern on? Pardon me, but did you get to your destination? Because that's why you got in the cab. You could have always insisted on getting out and walking if he didn't change the channel. Perhaps the driver felt strongly about his right to listen to whatever he wanted to while driving. But taking a cue from you, I'm going to insist on people turning off Rush and the rest of the RW blowhards whenever I come across them. Living in Missouri, not difficult to find a few mouth breathing dittoheads...

9. Taxi drivers aren't even supposed to have the radio on...

...and if you ask them to turn it off or change it, they're supposed to. I think that's written in the rules they post in the cab.

I was offended by the language I heard broadcast over the airwaves. It was coarse and vulgar. He compared some Americans to "nazis" and other to the "devil" - I told the driver to change the station. I didn't leave a tip - so take that cab driver!

8. So Your Mad At The Taxi Driver Then Since You Were Captive
That is not Stern's fault; yet you want him removed when under other circumstances you could have changed the channel.

That would make you a hypocrite.

13. Funny how announcing your democraticness makes me love you.
Honestly I now can say atleast one good thing about Jessica Simpson, Kevin Costner, and Roger Ebert: "they are democrats!"

God bless them.

16. Awesome article, thanks!
Comparing right wing to America's godawful pasteurized and equally remake-driven movie industry is apropos. I'd rather watch Scooby Doo 2 than have anything to do with right wing nonsense. (And the scooby doo movies are watered down puerile uncouth gross imitations of the original cartoon, not to mention that on top of remaking an old cartoon is doing a SEQUEL because people are too terrified of trying something new - or perhaps because everything that tries to be new sucks goose eggs.)
