What kind of a gun is this guy in Fallujah holding?
I know it is a machine gun of some kind but wtf? It looks like something from a James Cagney gangster movie. Anyone familiar with weapons know what it is?

A masked Iraqi insurgent carries a machine gun in the embattled town of Falluja April 13, 2004. U.S. Marines launched an offensive against Falluja, a city of about 300,000 people 50 km (32 miles) west of Baghdad, eight days ago to crack down on guerrillas and find those responsible for killing and burning four U.S. security guards on March 31. The fighting was some of the fiercest Iraq (news - web sites) has seen since U.S.-led forces launched the war that overthrew Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) more than a year ago. For the past three days, Falluja has been under a tenuous truce. REUTERS/Mohammed Khodor

1. Is that...
... a can off ammo attached to the bottom?

Is it some Thompson-esque type of thing?...But the ammo canisters on the tommy-gun were circular... hard to tell what's behind that can but it's probably a small stock...

Whataver it is, it looks rather old.

9. gotta luv the nomenclature
General purpose machine gun. Do they have specific purpose machine guns? No wonder assault weapons shouldn't be available to the general public. Imagine a neighborhood dispute with all parties owning those things?

14. The definition depends on whether you are a politican or a "gun nut"
Edited on Tue Apr-13-04 01:14 PM by TexasMexican
The assualt rifle ban, which I dont support and I hope it goes away, pretty much defines an assualt rifle as a rifle that has 3 "evil" features from a certain list. The list includes things such as the following: detachable magazine, bayonet lug, flash supressor, folding stock, pistol grip, maybe some other things.

So if you have a rifle that has a removable magazine, pistol grip, and a bayonet lug, it is an assault rifle. It doesnt matter if that its only semi-automatic (semi-automatic means that it only fires once when you pull the trigger, fully-automatic means if you hold the trigger it keeps firing) its still considered an assualt rifle.

People who are a little more knowledgable on guns than politicians, generally define assualt rifles as a rifle than has fully automatic capabilities, aswell as select fire capabilities, so that it could be changed from semi-auto to full-auto.

So something that looks exactly like an assualt rifle but is only capable semi-auto would not be an assualt rifle.

20. ..........
Sub machine gun - will fire pistol ammunition at full auto. .45 cal, 9mm, .40 cal etc

Assault Rifle - fires a round more powerful than pistol but not as powerful as the machine gun. 5.65 mm or 7.72 X 39 etc.

Machine gun - fires rifle ammunition 7.62 (.308) up to .50 cal.

10. Ammo Box
That machine gun uses linked ammo, so it could be used without the ammo can, however the can is there to keep all the ammo in one place so it can be moved around more easily.
