Cheney and Rice hiding out on 9/11 - Clarke in charge

The Professionals' Revolt

By Harold Meyerson

But Clarke did receive a huge if unspoken acknowledgment on the morning of Sept. 11: National security adviser Condoleezza Rice declined to run the so-called principals meeting in the White House Situation Room, choosing Clarke instead to coordinate the urgent information-gathering and to formulate the security responses to put before the president. Rice repaired, with Dick Cheney, to the White House basement's bomb shelter. A hijacked plane over Pennsylvania was headed toward Washington, and the rest of the White House evacuated at full sprint -- with the exception of Clarke and a handful of security professionals, who remained in the West Wing to continue their work."

I find it very interesting that Cheney and Rice were hiding out while Clarke was in harms way trying to figure out what to do.

1. Clarke was in a pretty demanding position,
considering he was "out of the loop" as Cheney put it.

2. Well we know Chaney and Rice are clueless
and probably changing their pants. But from the book Chaney's wife is going off on a religous thing and hanging up the phone to Clarke.

Every time they rerun her statement - all I can think of is what you have captured here....nobody told me, nobody told me, nobody told me -
in sufficient detail for my poor brain.

3. Typical chickenhawk response
give the problem to somebody else to solve, and run away. These people are pathetic.

4. What?
Might it ever have occured to anyone to put the situation room in the bomb shelter? Just wondering.

Of course Dr. Rice and Vice President Cheney weren't the only ones hiding out. At the very moment the attack was going on in the east the fuggin' chimp was high-tailing it (quite litterly) to the west.
