Selective Service and the new generation
In my job as a social worker I often times have to get kids ready to emancipate from the foster care system. In order to go to college and get financial aid you have to register for the draft - so when I counsel the young men on my caseload about college I also pull out a selective service form.

Their eyes bug out of their skull and intrestingly enough they enlighten me about how much they know on the war and how opposed to it they are. They still refuse to sign up and I let them know its their choice, but when I also bring up registering to vote - they turn that down too.....sigh.

1. Some people don't want to have a large foot-print
I have a friend who never got a social security number and never will. He doesn't like the idea of his existence being part of the public record. He also doesn't register to vote.

2. yeah, I kind of wonder what the reaction among the young will be,
if and when a draft is finally put in place. I have a feeling it will not be a peace movement so much as an increase in the Anarchy movement...and the violence it entails.

With social equality and welfare a fading dream, why should they feel much loyalty to this society?

America may be in for a rude awakening if these kids are pressganged into fighting Bullshit wars like Iraq.

Many young people have a lot firmer grip on what is 'real', than people of my generation did at their age...and have a lot harder edge about them.

They are the children of materialism, and can spot a con a mile away.
