Iraq Summary 4/8/2004 with map

Thursday, April 8

1. Fighting continued with Sunni insurgents in Fallujah. One U.S. Marine was killed.

2. A donkey cart packed with explosives was detonated in Baqouba just moments after a U.S. convoy had passed. Ten Iraqis were killed and 20 injured.

3. Polish and Bulgarian soldiers drove off Shiites during all-night battles in Karbala.

4. Moktada al Sadr's militia held full control of Kut, which was abandoned by Polish troops on Wednesday.

5. Residents of Kufa said Mr. Sadr's al-Mahdi Army also was in charge there, holding police stations and government buildings.

6. Mr. Sadr's militiamen had partial control of Najaf, although U.S. officials said they expected to soon regain control.
