A letter by a local freeper in our Sunday newspaper has blown the cover for "gayo-Americans", and revealed the hidden homosexual agenda! Those dastardly homosexuals, with their evil plots to destroy heterosexual marriages and eventually take over the world! </sarcasm>

I am deeply concerned over efforts of homosexuals to gain the so-called "right to marry."

I have learned recently that homosexual activists actually have a hidden agenda in their effort to gain legal status for same-sex relationships: They want to destroy the concept of marriage altogether!

The Traditional Values Coalition has recently published a report that quotes homosexual activists about this real agenda. One of them is Michelangelo Signorile, who writes in "Out" magazine that homosexuals should "fight for same-sex marriage and its benefits and then, once granted, redefine the institution of marriage completely."

TVC also quotes from the "1972 Gay Rights Platform Demands," in which homosexuals demand "repeal of all legislative provisions that restrict the sex or number of persons entering into a marriage unit." nothing can ever destroy the concept of marriage as long as there's a woman who wants to be princess for the day, wear the big, white dress, have the big, huge party with all the presents and money.

So, how does Mr. Brilliant assess marriages arranged on "Who wants to marry a millionare?" What about serial marriages of movies stars back in the day? How is that not any more of a mockery to the institution of marriage than gays marrying?

To me, shows like that makes a bigger mockery of the institution of marriage than two gays/lesbians who are thoroughly committed to one another and have been for years and years.

11. The institution of marriage

was re-defined when divorce became legal, again when white men where allowed to marry black women,and visa-versa. It hasn't gone away. Marriage is still well and thriving. All gay and lesbian people want is the same rights that all people have who want to be committed to each other as a unit/couple. There are over 1001 federal and state rights that apply to married couples that dont apply to non married couples. That is all we want.

13. I've wondered if the real issue is gender

For people who believe that men and women are completely different and have completely different roles in life, it would seem that gay marriage would completely redefine marriage. For those who believe that individual men and women have a right to be whatever they want to be and have most roles available to them (with the exception of some physical impossibilities like men giving birth), gay marriage doesn't seem like a big deal.
For example, perhaps Mary would prefer to be the one who does the lawn work and has the higher earning job whether or not she would marry a man or a woman and John would prefer to stay at home and take care of the house whether or not he married a man or woman.
I think a lot of these people don't look at it this way.

If it's important to keep women subservient to their husbands--and in much religious dogma concerning marriage, it's clear that one of the primary functions of marriage is to keep women under the control of a man once her father relinquishes control or dies--then the concept of gay marriage does upend the whole institution.

But what I really think is going on is that it's not just about gender "roles," but about control over reproduction. That's why I think that feminism and tolerance towards homosexuality go hand-in-hand.
