Sorry. I couldn't resist; you've probably heard that only a zillion times. Last night I was reading a thread on Daily Kos. Someone mentioned finding an address for Terrance J. Wilkinson on Google when they typed in the name plus Maryland. The thread's still there. I dunno. It seems there's a pretty high probablility of this story being just that, a story.

19. Curious ...
"It seems there's a pretty high probablility of this story being just that, a story. " ....

I presume you mean by "just a story" that the assertions made by Mr Wilkinson are Fiction ? .....

Why ? ..... Are we to presume that such a person is lying automatically ? .....

24. No, Trajan
I was thinking more of CHB's sleaze reputation. Also, if you're Mr. Wilkinson and you want to spill the beans, why not go to a nationally known, reputable jounalist/newspaper/periodical? I know the author claims to have known the subject for a number of years; maybe that's why, maybe the story's true. I just don't automatically believe everything in print even when I really want to.

16. How about this?
Call the CIA and ask to speak with him. You don't even have to talk to him in the office, just ask if you can meet up/call later and get a number. Or talk to the guy who runs Capitol Hill Blue. Hays he's known him for 20 years.....

20. As I've posted elsewhere, I think I've ID'd the guy. That is, IF...
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 12:35 PM by Brotherjohn
... the story is even true.

He's mentioned in these two stories:
http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/news/6131186.htm
http://www.oaklandtribune.com/Stories/0,1413,82~1865~1467084,00.html

The two stories are variations on the same story (both credited to the same two NY Times reporters) and discuss the possible use of Task Force 20, whose main goal is to find WMD in Iraq, to also find Hussein. Task force 20 is described as a "secret military organization" operating "with support from the CIA".

A "James Wilkinson", alternately described as a "spokesman" and a "news officer" with Task Force 20, is quoted as saying "he would not comment on the special military team or its mission".

The "J." in "Terrance J." could stand for "James", and the guy could go by his middle name.

I realize this is tenuous, and the entire story has yet to pan out. But no one else has found a person of this name linked to the CIA at all. Not only that, but this "James Wilkinson" is a guy who is in Iraq (as of June 20th) as a member of a secret military unit working with the CIA to find WMD. And he's quoted as giving "no comment" regarding that unit's mission.

Now, I don't know if this is the guy. But I think if the story is true, it could very well be. And if the story is a fabrication, Capitol Hill Blue couldn't have done better in getting a straw man whose story is difficult to either prove or disprove.

ON EDIT:
Has Doug Thompson of CHB in Iraq recently, where he may have talked to this guy?

25. Here is something
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 01:40 PM by 9215
From a June 20th New York Times story on searching for Saddam Hussein(via the Oakland Tribune reprint of the story: <http://www.oaklandtribune.com/Stories/0,1413,82~1865~1467084,00.html>

It has been known that Task Force 20 has led the hunt for chemical and biological weapons. But the unit's role in trying to determine the fate of Saddam has not been previously disclosed. Some officials have suggested that the efforts are linked and that he or his sons left power with a precise knowledge of Iraq's weapons program."

"Task Force 20, the military organization that defense officials said had been charged with conducting the search, reports to the Central Command and its leader, Gen. Tommy R. Franks. The Central Command has only recently acknowledged the existence of Task Force 20, and and a spokesman for the U.S. Central Command, James Wilkinson, said he would not comment on the special military team or its mission. But other United States officials said the team was being supported by several intelligence agencies, including the CIA, and was organized to allow it to act quickly on intelligence gathered by satellites and electronic eavesdropping." "J. (James) Wilkinson", in Iraq, linked (by the story at least) to the CIA and the hunt for WMD.

Maybe contacting the Oakland Tribune could turn something up.

Has Cap Hill Blues responded to any inquiries?

Wilkinson, if this story is true, is a most serious threat to the White House spin machine.

26. See my Post (#20) above.
I've been posting on this since yesterday, when I did a Google search and found it. I'm not convinced at all that the story is true, but if it is, this could very well be the "Terrance J. Wilkinson". There are just too many connections (the name, the CIA, secret goings on in Iraq linked to the search for WMD...).

The Oakland tribune probably couldn't tell us much, as they just reprinted a New York Times story. The New York Times reporters (Douglas Jehl and David Johnston) probably couldn't either, since they were just quoting this spokesman. On the other hand, if Jehl and/or Johnston are still in Iraq and can contact this spokesman to find out if he is "Terrance J. Wilkinson", we may have something.

Can anyone contact the NYT and ask them to ask their reporters if they could follow up on this? Do you think they may already be doing so?

Wilkinson could be in hiding, or being hidden, or possibly worse. Then you have the potential confusion from the CIA use of aliases. Wilkinson disappearing about now would be the best thing to happen to the White House cabal.

This guy is akin to Deepthroat in Watergate.

I can't think of anyone who would run this scam on Thompson for 20 years culminating in a deception that's so easy to debunk.

Is this person a Rove operative, perhaps? Can anyone figure it out??

31. Yeah.
Capitol Hill Blue is not now and never has been a reliable source.

What IS it with people who can perfectly well see that if the "information" being offered goes against their ideological preconceptions but not when it suits them?

CHB flat-out MADE STUFF UP about Clinton during the Lewinsky Scandal. I knew he was crap then when a FREEPER, for God's sake, warned me off CHB (albiet, a smart and honest Freeper, even if a somewhat loopy).

It's the same thing with Scott Ritter. The man returns from Iraq and trashes Clinton and Albright (to great huzzahs from the looney-right Senate caucus) on grounds exactly opposite the grounds he now trashes Bush and Rumsfeld. So why do people believe this crap from a DEMONSTRABLY unreliable source?

The anti-war/anti-Bush forces would be far better served putting Doug Thompson and Scott Ritter in long-term storage.
