Im hunkering down for the worst and for the best
Back in the 1980s, when my first husband was a union man and still alive before he was killed by poor OSHA standards during the Raygun admin, he and I talked about the dumbing down of the USA and I told him then that if people were uneducated, the USA would be ripe for a dictatorship and allow someone like Hitler to take over. see: Bush
Add to that Gore Vidal's statement, that "the Constitution and Bill of Rights always hang by a thread in this nation and are constantly being attacked" and Vidals take on the fact that we had a choice a while back to choose empire building over a free society.
Now we are at the moment I knew would happen, and have a quasi free press, in some cases no press, (the only saving grace is the Internet), and we are at a threshhold and unprecedented time when the nation will either go towards social enlightenment, or turn to becoming the dark ages, as we see now with the press muffling itself, corporations owning the politicians, the press, and short term CEO profits taking precedence over ethics and morals .
The Oligarchy is in charge.
They are slowly being revealed, as each day passes, but when Clarke, for instance, comes out, he is attacked by the spin machine.
Add to that his request that the press demand to talk about the issues, and not him.
The WH is blundering with not allowing Rice to testify, and the CIA is now saying they will only allow shabby little snippets of transcripts.
The only hope at this point imho is that any number of things will destroy the Bush mafia
1. more rats jump ship and whistleblow loudly enough to wake up the media
2. they have to be BIG rats, not small ones
3. Dems wake up and start getting spine like Byrd did
4. Nader drops out and backs Kerry
5. the draft needs legs... www.bushdraft.com as a meme
6. BlackBoxvoting needs more exposure its being ignored by the media even tho it got some attention its now not getting it as much
7. It has to get worse for individuals before people wake up

Worst scenario is people will wake up, vote, and their votes will mean nothing if Diebold steals it.
Then there will be civil war.
We head into a fascist state, and we are there for a long time, and its 1933 Germany all over again.
If the Internet is taken from us, and at this point this crowd would do that, I dont think they wont try at this point we need alternatives to speak with each other.
Local action needed, just like I worked here on getting rid of the evangelicals who tried to alter our city charter to a biblical charter (they lost)
Eternal vigilance at a local level, including voting machines, fraud, etc
letters to editors in local papers
letters to every news source you can
constant calls to local reps and Congress or emails
keep plugging away at the press like crazy
the squeaky wheel gets the grease
and remember my sig line. I have to. I have a kid in Iraq, and that sig line keeps me going.
anyway, Im hunkering down and hoping for the best, ready for the worst.

1. Well the parallels to '33 are adecuate
but you also have to remember, 1800 and 1932 for this country... you could also add to this 1858, and the civil war.

Some have even joked that Kerry looks like Lincoln and maybe the South will secede again... I know some mean it as a joke... I am serious when I say that this could lead to civil war either way.

By the way, tell your son to hunker down and keep his head down... and come home.

2. "The consolidation of wealth is the first step toward fascism"
- Henry Kissinger.

Every one must hit our Corporate owned and GOP run media. Blast them hard with letters etc. March to the doors of their Corporate office of distortions and demand the voice of truth and justice. End the lies and omissions of concrete details. Stop the wreckage of human truth. Outlaw the Rovian dictators who kills true reporting with death threats, career smears, and the ends of all future.

Civil war is not far off if the Bush co. complete their true objectives. I pray it never comes.

3. I just don't know
Americans have started to really scare me. Some may be waking up but many are spiraling downward in a collective denial, which is often arrogant and mean spirited. There seems to be a kind of chest pounding pride in being ignorant. I just don't know.......
