Letters In My Newspaper-----Most Of Them Are Against Bush!
I'm going to write a few examples of letters from my Sunday Globe paper in here. I was very surprised to see that most of them were against Bush, and his war on "terra."

"Why Was Clark Outside The 'Loop'?

I could list for hours the many ways that the Bush administration's doublespeak often cycles back and showcases its incompetence and arrogance. Are they so stupid they don't realize what they are revealing, or do they think we are so stupid that we won't connect the dots?

I, for one, am not that stupid, and the latest snippet from Vice President Cheney is quite a gem. Cheney said on Limbaugh's show that Richard Clarke "wasn't in the loop, frankly." So Cheney is trying to discredit Clarke, who was the counterterrorism czar at the time, by pointing out that he was excluded from the inner circle? What does it say about the priorities and mentality of Bush and company that they excluded a man whose sole responsibility was to coordinate counterterrorism efforts?

It demonstrates the disconnected reality and immature mentality embraced by this select group of power-hungry, self-centered interwoven men who chose to use their first 280 days in office to cultivate junior high-type cliques and ignore very real threats. And isn't this exactly what Clarke said on "60 minutes," that his repeated request for Cabinet level meetings about Al Qaeda were ignored, that he was placed outside the loop?

Cheney uses the exclusion of Clarke as a defense of the Bush administration's pre-9/11 policy. How on earth does he consider the death of 3,000 at the WTC defensible? If I were Cheney, I would be mortified, guilt-ridden, and forever apologetic knowing I had participated in keeping the counterterrorism czar out of the loop and as a direct result, 9/11 happened.

But then again, I have a conscience and concern for my fellow citizens. By this admission of guilt presented as an alibi, Cheney reveals that he and those in his loop do not.

Alison Hunt,
Brookline"

Again, wow.....this is an excellent letter!

"The Fundamentalist States of America

Great concern is expressed over the potential for a militant Islamic state in Iraq, similar to Iran and, to a lesser degree, Saudi Arabia. The threat is that the government will pass and enforce laws based on a new leader's religious vision for the future of the country.

There may be a dangerous parallel to this trend in our own country.

There was a Bush campaign ad on TV recently in which the president, facing the camera, gave a list fo problems facing the country and in each case said, "I know" how to deal with these issues. The message given was that he had the answers.

Several months ago President Bush stated that the United States had a "calling" to bring freedom and democracy to Iraq. In Bush's fundamentalist Christian world, that word has a special meaning. It is something preordained, not action taken after investigation and sober reflection of facts and alternatives. It is something dictated by a higher power.

Add this to his frequent statements that there is no middle ground between good and evil, his administration's plan for "faith-based alternatives," and his opposition to freedom of choice and his attempts to define "marriage." Do we not have a government moving toward decision-making based on someone's interpretation of certain religious teachings and beliefs?

How does this differ, except by degree, from the message of the imams and ayatollahs that goverment exists not to carry out the will of the people, but the will of the prophet as they choose to interpret it?

Anthony McManus,
Dover, N.H."

Wow....just wow...I hope that many others in MA and NH are reading the letters in the Sunday editorial!I'll post one more letter, and then that'll be that.

"GOP's Use of 9/11 Imagery is Tasteless

Liz Jones of Maynard misses the point in her March 19 letter, "for the left, Bush can't do anything right." President Bush's use of 9/11 imagery is tasteless because the tragedy occurred on his watch, and none of his work warrants merit by association with the heroes who lost their lives in the tragedy.

In fact, his politicization of the event begs condemnation of his leadership for polarizing an event that should have brought Americans and the moderates of the world together. The Democrats are clamoring for pictures of returning dead American soldiers. This would bring home the reality of a war that they oppose on the basis of its false pretenses and its continued toll on our soldiers.

Kerry's allegiance to his fellow Vietnam veterans speaks more to his understanding of the toll of war on a people than to the type of opportunism displayed by our duty-dodging junior President Bush. Jones misses the point of these images entirely, and is too quick to accept the shallow views of the media's conservative pundits.

Pete Jones,
Mayfield"

Ouch! That was a zinger! Alright...here's a challenge for you DUers. I want you to find the letters in your Sunday editorial and post them in here. Can you do it?

they always have to include one or two dittohead letters.

Lately there have been a lot of anti-Bush letters. Good to see.

I didn't know you lived in Mass. Are you coming to the DU gathering next Saturday in Cambridge?

3. I got a LTTE in my paper today....
Living in a blood red state, I felt most readers here were going to look for letters worshipping the Chimp. So here was mine published under the title the editors gave it. "Bush amasses quite a record"

Here is the letter:

As the campaign heats up its important to note how things are really looking up under Bush, Since his selection four years ago, unemployment is up, job outsourcing is up and the devaluation rate of the dollar has really taken off. Air and water pollution are a growth industry as are deforesting and endangered species. The Bush budget deficit has even shattered the Reagan record. Naturally corporate profits and tax breaks for the richest 1% are way up and Bush's campaign coffers have never been stacked higher with corporate cash.

Violent crime is trying to keep up with surging white collar crime.
Homelessness, bankruptcy and foreclosures are on a record breaking streak. Prescription drug prices are soaring. It's been a bull market for lying to Congress, the UN and the American people too. Secrecy, stonewalling, buck passing and denial are growing almost as fast as hypocrisy, bogus religiosity and scapegoating.

More of our former allies turn their back on us every day. The maiming and deaths of our soldiers in needless wars is on a steady climb too, especially since Bush declared "Mission Accomplished." Al Qaeda recruitment is up almost as much as terrorist attacks all over the world. So let's give credit where credit is due. If you want to keep all this up, vote Bush this November.

7. Last Night Overhead Rich Republicans Talking Against Bush....
The rich Scottsdale guys and wives, were next to our table. One guy declared himself a liberal democrat, one an independent and 4 bush republicans. The 4 bush republicans said they'll vote for any one, except Hillary. The liberal democrat was outstanding in pointing out all the best qualities of Kerry. The independent wanted Dean but will vote for Kerry. All of them agreed that Dean was outstanding in fighting the fight when it was not popular. The 6 women in the group all hated bush. So if rich Scottsdale people vote for Kerry, WE WIN.

Listening to this group last night, was much better than the show we paid big bucks to see.

9. I have a couple from the AZ Republic should I just post the links
or the whole letter?

Here are the links:

"Clarke editorial reveals tunnel vision"
http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/opinions/articles/0328sunlets284.html

This one's small, so I'll just post the whole thing:

"OK, we're in; now what?"
Mar. 28, 2004 12:00 AM

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/opinions/articles/0328sunlets286.html

The official rationale for Iraq has many of the properties of Aesop's fables. Too bad the president wasn't fully acquainted with the ancient fabulist:

"Affairs are easier of entrance than of exit; and it is but common prudence to see our way out before we venture in." - William W. Phillips, Scottsdale

Here's one from an Op-Ed Contributor Jana Bommersbach:

"Bite you back, You Can't Spin Away Clarke's Words"

http://www.azcentral.com/specials/pluggedin/articles/0326bommers0326clarke.html

To be fair there is a Pro-Bush letter:

"Clarke's Testimony Full of Holes"
http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/opinions/articles/0328sunlets285.html

You have to remember, this is a REPUBLICAN newspaper - The Arizona REPUBLIC - but, we ARE a battleground state and you can see all is not well for Bushboy.

11. Well that offers hope
My paper today was about 50/50. I just wish truth could find a way to be projected into the public whereby the right's propaganda couldn't refute it without appearing obvious to an uninformed public.

14. From the Atlanta Journal Constitution
This should lead to regime change

Many thanks to Richard Clarke for his fearless, forthright testimony before the Sept. 11 commission. Many of us felt that finally someone was telling the truth about the Bush administration's early, obsessive focus on Iraq and the disastrous result on Sept. 11, 2001.

Rather than refute Clarke's assertions, the administration has attempted (unsuccessfully) to assassinate his character or to shift the blame for Sept. 11 onto its favorite whipping boy -- the Clinton administration.

I hope enough open-minded citizens will be persuaded by the revelations of Clarke, Paul O'Neill and other administration insiders to bring about a regime change in Washington.

when my stepdad today admitted that "that guy Clarke would make a better president, better than anyone running now". I was in shock! Because he was one of the biggest "pro chimp" supporters I've ever known!

22. The Bushies have the media. The people have the Letters Section
of every newspaper, which is usually the most popular section, after the front page headlines.

Write as frequently as the Letters editor will allow (I'm allowed one a month in my paper). It matters.

23. Exactly right....
LTTE are read more than the editorials that surround them. Those who can pen a good tight, pithy letter that skewers Bush should do it as often as their papers allow.
