1. Your repub stepfather
probably has no idea about the terrible things in that book.

Most of them don't really know what they're supporting and wouldn't support it if they knew.

Now you've got real amunition should any of them challenge you with their crap again.

Good luck!

6. Ther is an article in this month's Harpers Magazine
talks about the Repub. Backlash. and how it
"rallies citizens who would once have been reliable partisans of the New Deal to the standard of conservatism....
"...The primary contradiction of the backlash: It is a working-class movement that has done incalculable, historic harm to working-class people."

2. Tell me about it...
...GREAT book though. Franken is utterly hilarious throughout. And, this new Air America network for liberals couldn't possibly be coming at a BETTER time. We'll finally have a voice on a forum the RePukes have dominated for too long. It'll get better.

3. Also read....
"Bushwacked" by Molly Ivins and Lou Dubose. I thought I was pretty well informed on the BFEE and particularly Shrub's political history, but this book proved to me that things were even worse than I thought. Depressing, perhaps, but essential information none the less.

9. Moore? Probably. WTF is wrong with Franken? Should we stick with
some watered-down, "inoffensive" little wuss like Colmes?

Please.

24. I'm thinking you haven't read books by either of them.
Otherwise you would realize how utterly wrong you are.

Franken and Moore have done much to galvanize the current awareness of and, let's face it, anger at many of the boneheaded moves made by the current administration.

But hey, who needs to read, huh?

10. Come on !!!! Ann Coulter?
Franken's book is satire. He uses satire to show what lying pieces of crap are running this country and its lapdog media.

All Ann does is spew hate and venom of all kinds,

There is no comparison. Absolutely none.

Franken has a brain and he is using it to HELP us, I'm sorry you can't get over your own issues enough to appreciate him.

21. I don't agree that it is satire.
It is impeccably researched and chock full of extremely accurate information about all kinds of things. Of course, he employs satire from time to time, in order to make a point, but the book is for the most part completely factual.

I agree with you that he does not spew hate and venom. He simply points out how the other side does that.

25. Right Crunchyfrog
I was fading fast when I wrote that as I had been working on our county's platform past my bedtime :argh:

With an excellent marshalling of the facts and a sharp wit, Franken uses satire, to point out the mess that the Repugs have made of this country and then exposes the despicable way the lie and sow hatred to cover up their trail.

11. I'm going to go out on a limb...
and suggest that perhaps you've not actually read any Al Franken. The typical neocon spin on Franken is that he's rabid, hateful, yadda yadda...

In truth, he's very thoughtful and creative in his speacherisms. He uses a great deal of sarcasm and ironic metaphorical device, but the only people who believe that that equals hateful are those that would have to look up the words "ironic" and "metaphorical" in the dictionary.

Is he incredibly passionate? Hell yah, he is. Is he "our" version of Ann Coulter? Christ... not by a LONG shot.

12. no no no
Franken is mean, but he doesn't call repubs "traitors" or anything like that. And rather than sticking it to repubs in general, he targets only the powerful repubs who screw us everyday.

C'mon man, no one ever said we had to be nice here. It's long past time for the gloves to come off

17. it is offensive and irresponsible to compare franken to that bitch
Franken doesn't lie. He backs up his shit with facts--something that bitch knows nothing about. And as long as he has facts on his side, he can damn well say whatever he wants.

Ann Coulter is an insane bitch. As long as parasites like coulter are in our society, we desperately need folks like Al Franken to neutralize the spread of such diseases.

19. Fine
I'll assume here that you are just genuinely mistaken. Maybe you are confusing Franken with someone else, who knows?

Tell me though. What exactly has Al Franken ever said that you think puts him in Coulter's bile-filled league? The man writes the Truth, capital T, and backs it up every step of the way with hard, verifiable, facts. Has he ever thrown what you call a "bomb"? Sure, but only true ones, and he always backs it up.

20. Sorry, I just don't see that.
Ann Coulter is all about flat out hate, and meaningless namecalling. She calls anyone who doesn't agree with right wing ideology an out and out traitor. She talks as if she would like to see us all shipped of to camps, or even killed. Plus, she just makes things up.

Al Franken researches his material impeccably, in order to point out the lies told by the RW and accepted by so many without question. He is not about hating anyone because of their political beliefs, if fact he points out many conservatives whom he likes and respects.

He has adopted the in my opinion, completely correct attitude that we, (the liberals) are not going to just keep taking it anymore. At some point, when your opponent is constantly calling you a traitor, and unAmerican and simply making up crap about you, that you need to start standing up for yourself and fighting back.

Wimpy liberals have allowed the RW to take over and define the entire political discourse in this country. If we don't finally stand up to them, then they win, and we become irrelevant, or worse.

I'm sorry if a liberal actually standing up to the RW bullies makes you uncomfortable. As someone else suggested, you may be happier with Alan Colmes. I for one am intensely grateful for what Al Franken is doing.

I don't think he makes us look bad at all, I think he makes us look strong and self respecting. I think this will increase respect for liberalism in this country. Bending over for RWers never will win us any respect, believe it or not.

23. I don't know, i'm not sure about you.
Franken backs up his claims by sources.
Coulter exposes her own claims as lies with the 'footnotes' in her own book.
Franken may be -your- version of Coulter, not mine.

Coulter just spews bile. Some of Franken's stunts are not completely to my taste, but you have to respect all he has done to ignite the left.

8. Good. Now, do you want to get REALLY pissed off? Read
Gregory Palast's "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy".

You'll blow a gasket. You think SCOTUS was the only funny business in Florida in 2000? Try 75,000 ILLEGALLY disenfranchized voters, demographically democrat.

Yup.

13. Could not agree more..
Farkin' fantastic book.

How come the only people speaking the truth about this country either live in Texas (Molly Ivins, Jim Hightower), areJon Stewart, or don't live in the country at all? (Greg Palast, Naomi Klein...)

Too weird.

15. God help that country where informers thrive,
Where slander flourishes, and lies contrive,
To kill by whispers, where men lie to live.
God help that country by informers fed,
Where fear corrupts, where suspicions spread,
By look and gesture, even unto the dead.

14. MadProphetMargin- Holy cow how true
Edited on Sat Mar-27-04 02:59 AM by BEFOREATHOUGHT
I was going to start a thread about Greg Palast's "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy". The first chapter sent my blood pressure threw the roof putting me in a state of demoralization.

I have only been able to read a chapter and a half since. I usually finish books as fast as I start them. Greg Palast's book is like a really hot pepper that can only be eaten every now and then.
