What did Rice Tell Bush at 9am Call on 9/11?
On September 11, when Bush arrived at the Booker School shortly before 9:00 am, it is believed he already knew that the first plane had hit the first WTC. He was told that there was an urgent call from Condi Rice. He went into the school and took the call.

As National Security Adviser, Rice knew -- she had to have KNOWN -- that 3 planes had been hijacked, one had hit the WTC, one was mere minutes from hitting the other WTC tower and a third plane was heading towards Washington. The Pentagon had known about the 3rd plane about 10 minutes BEFORE Rice's call.

When Bush came out of the school a few minutes later, he said he would continue with the reading/photo-op.

Q: What did Rice talk to Bush about?

From an article I co-wrote:

Booker principal Gwen Tose-Rigell was waiting for Bush outside the school. "The limousine stops and the president comes out. He walks toward me. I'm standing there in a lineup; there are about five people. He walks over and says he has to make a phone call, and he'll be right back." (MSNBC, 09/02, Telegraph, 12/16/01) The phone call was with National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice. From a room with secure communications, Rice updated Bush on the situation. (Christian Science Monitor, 9/17/01, Time, 9/12/01) The fact that Bush immediately said he had to make an important call strongly suggests he was told about the situation while in the motorcade. But some accounts have Andrew Card saying to Bush as he gets out of his limousine, "Mr. President, you really need to take this phone call," thereby implying that Card knows what's going on, but Bush doesn't. (St. Petersburg Times, 9/8/02 (B))

As National Security Advisor, Rice had to have had as much information as anyone. By the time she spoke to Bush, she must have known that three planes had been hijacked and that the country was under attack. We know very little about the conversation - only that Rice later claimed, "(Bush) said, what a terrible, it sounds like a terrible accident. Keep me informed." (ABC News, 9/11/02) One reporter noted: "Bush did not appear preoccupied (after the phone call) … There was no sign that Rice had just told (him) about the first attack (on the World Trade Center)." (Cox News, 9/12/01 (B)) Tose-Rigell was then summoned to a room to talk with Bush: "He said a commercial plane has hit the World Trade Center, and we're going to go ahead and go on, we're going on to do the reading thing anyway." (AP, 8/19/02 (D))

One local reporter notes that at this point, "He could and arguably should have left Emma E. Booker Elementary School immediately, gotten onto Air Force One and left Sarasota without a moment's delay ... But he didn't." (Sarasota Herald-Tribune, 9/12/01 (B)) The only possible excuse is that Bush was completely clueless as to what was happening. Sure enough, at a press conference on the evening of 9/11, Press Secretary Ari Fleischer was asked by a reporter, "And then this morning, when Andy Card told him about the first accident, was Andy Card or Condi Rice or any of those aware of the hijackings? What did they know when they --" Fleischer cut in and replied, "No, at that point they were not." (Knoxville News Sentinel, 9/11/01) So supposedly, 15 minutes after the first crash, none of Bush's aides, not even Rice back in Washington, DC, knew a thing about the hijackings that had been reported to NORAD 20 minutes earlier? This simply is not plausible.

3. What Room
at the school has secure communications? Wouldn't there be a secure phone in the limo? Wouldn't that mean that he already spoke to condi before he even left the limo?

5. room
they had lots of rooms set up at the school ahead of time. extra phone lines etc. i'm sure there was some secure room. that's no big deal.

check out the article -- the night before, the owner of the hotel bush stayed at got a tour of the preznit limo and was wowed by all the electronic equipment. so we know they could have reached bush immediately.

rice knew ther attack was in full bloom by 9am. cheney was being rushed to the concrete bunker and yet she spoke with bush and allowed him to reading to 2nd graders.

the media must know about this and pound rice on it.

2. she won't answer
because it will confirm what we all know - after the first tower was hit they allowed a hit on the second tower and the Pentagon. A logical question would be WHY WEREN'T THE SECOND TOWER AND PENTAGON EVACUATED ???? She cannot answer; that is why she refused to testify under oath. These people are guilty of DERELICTION OF DUTY.

6. You've got to read Clarke's book!
He and his staff had to start the ball rolling and run the sit room because CONdi just stood there.

12. Yes - please read the book!
There are so many tidbits in it that the media will never cover.

On any page you open it to, there is something fascinating.

Like the fact that while Clarke and his crew were running the country from the situation room on 9-11, Cheney, Lynn Cheney and I think Condi were in the Bunker.

The situation room is under the West Wing, while the bunker is under the East Wing.

Clarke wanted to keep the phone line open between them, but Lynn Cheney kept hanging it up because it bothered her.

Somehow it was interfering with her ability to watch CNN.

Godamighty. Life (and death) is happening right under her nose, and she wants to watch it on television instead of helping the designated governors govern.

22. Here's the quote from Clarke's book:
From p 17:

“Cressey told me that Fenzel was looking for me. I picked up the open line to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center, only to find that once again it was a dial tone. When I punched the PEOC button, the person answering the line grunted and passed the phone to Major Fenzel. “Who is the asshole answering the phone for you, Mike?” I asked.”

“That would be the Vice President, Dick.”

And, from p. 18:

“It’s fine,” Major Fenzel whispered, “but I can’t hear the crisis conference because Mrs. Cheney keeps turning down the volume on you so she can hear CNN … and the Vice President keeps hanging up the open line to you” Mrs. Cheney was more than just a family member who had to be protected. Like her husband, she was a right-wing ideologue and she was offering her advice and opinions in the bunker.”

11. There's a photo from that day that I also find interesting
It's a very public photo of a bunch of people in a small room huddled around Cheney. The one to Cheney's right leaning in and yacking and providing apparently a bunch of input/direction was Karen Hughes. Why the hell was the most important thing right then the goddamn communications director and chief propaganda writer?? Where were high level people who would be making great national security decisions and giving info to Bush, etc.?? Important types were standing around in the background. I want to know why the hell Hughes played such a dominant role at a time like this>??--trying to get the lies straight, perhaps, for publication?? You can see what was priority on their minds--how to spin it.

16. Mary Matlin was also in the bunker
Condi, Hughes, Matlin, Lynne Cheney... It's odd. Maybe the plan was that after the US was burned off the map Cheney and his vampire brides would emerge from the bunker. In addition to being president and king Cheney would have the awesome responsibility of fathering a new human race by impregnating his improbable harem of crazy Republican media crones.

So where the hell was Peggy Noonan on 9/11?

20. The chain of command was pretty much vacant
I've got to buy the book soon. The more I pick up about what was going on in the WH command and control structure, the more it looks like damn near all the neo-cons disintegrated under the pressure and went into "deer-in-headlights" mode.

Clarke, maybe Matalin, and some junior staffers were the only functional humans in the command and control areas (situation room and bunker) of the White House. We know now that the military wasn't even put on alert until Gen. Myers did it more than an hour after the Pentagon got hit. Bush was at the school, completely out of position. Cheney was for all practical purposes out of the loop because his wife kept turning off the crisis communication system to watch TV. The only way Cheney would allow that to happen was if he was in "deer-in-headlights" mode, too. We know that Rumsfeld was in his office, not the Pentagon command center when the Pentagon was hit. So Rumsfeld was somehow out of the loop as well. I'll credit Rumsfeld for being a functional human, because he did help some wounded at the Pentagon, but he was completely out of position and not doing the job he was supposed to be doing. Powell was out of the country. The chain of command sits now at who, Paul O'Neill? Ashcroft?

17. I've alwalys wanted to believe in the possibility that IF there was
a LIHOP or MIHOP that Bush actually watched the first a/c strike from his limo on a closed line broadcast - just as he said. (And that the tape or live picture of it was captured and transmitted by the same people who arranged the explosives in the building). ;o)
