If Clarke was demoted, why was he demoted?
Edited on Thu Mar-25-04 02:10 PM by The Night Owl
Cheney is trying to push the notion that Richard Clarke defected from the Bush administration because he was bitter for having been demoted. If Clarke was demoted, why was he demoted? Why did the cretins at Bushco demote one of the few people who warned of the 9/11 attacks before they happened? Did Bush want the extra challenge of not having a talented guy like Clarke helping thwart terror attacks? I guess my questions answer themselves to a certain degree... I just wish the media would ask them.

1. Because the Bush team had their own plan for combatting terrorism
And it was a really good plan, too! Whatever it was.

2. Exactly. He was demoted because the Bush people saw little need..
..for someone with his expertise.

Per 9-11 commissioner Kerrey.

4. That's the claim, but that plan was being developed by Condi Rice...
...and she got away with not appearing before the commission under oath and in public. So, until the public hears the plan from Condi's own lips we won't know for sure. It's a little like Richard Nixon's secret plan to end the Vietnam war during the 1968 elections. The war continued until he was booted out of office in August of 1975. That can not be allowed to happen here. :grr:

12. just to clarify, I was being sarcastic
The White House spin is they didn't need him because they favored a different approach to fighting Al Qaeda. But they won't tell us what that approach was, and whatever it was it obviously didn't work.

Whereas some of the Clinton administration's suggestions (reinforced cockpit doors, tighter airport security, mandating tagents in explosives) might have.

5. Clarke wouldn't have approved of their little plans...
He had to be moved to another dept. and fast.

6. Clarke says his position changed per his own request
He testified yesterday that because Bush Co. paid hardly any attention to his terror recommendations etc, he felt frustrated and useless, and figured that if the Bush people didn't trust their own counter-terrorism guy to do his job properly, then maybe they should hire someone else. So he suggested to them that he be put into a new position where he felt he would be useful, a position of his own making .... cyber security.

11. Clarke MUST have figured out WHY he was being ignored
He must have figured out that Georgie And Associates had their own agenda in mind. He must have figured that if he didn't buy into it, he'd have to jump before he was pushed. But he probably also figured that he'd be leaving the inmates in charge of the asylum if he quit right away. At least he was able to observe what was going on until he felt ready to resign--and write his book!

8. he wasn't demoted--he asked for re-assignment since
he realized he couldn't do what was needed in his position with the Bushies in charge. They have chosen to spin this as a demotion because it looks bad for Clarke if stated like that. They are liars and deceitful f***tards.

10. A small blurb from the Connason interview
Why did they keep you on, if they were so uninterested in what you were focused on? And then why did they downgrade your position?

They said, in so many words, at the time, that they didn't have anyone in their Republican coterie of people that came in with Bush, who had an expertise in this area who wanted the job. And they actually said they found the job a little strange -- since it wasn't there when they had been in power before.
