7. it's a tax dodge
Edited on Tue Mar-23-04 11:28 PM by unblock
texas has extremely easy residency requirements: you basically just have to inform the state (sec'y of state i think) that you intend to one day make texas your home (!) and presto, you're a resident for tax purposes. declaring an actual address that you occassionally sleep at is actually more than what's required, but can come in handy at audit time nonetheless.

now, texas has no state income tax, so that can come in handy. so if you really live in an income taxing state, you just have to make sure you also avoid that state's residency requirements, e.g., by travelling enough days in the year, and voila! you've legally avoided making a contribution to community you live in and mooch public services from!

bush the elder did this while president to avoid paying d.c. taxes.

putz.

8. They avoid State of MAINE taxes as well that way!
They have a beautiful multimillion dollar oceanfront property at Walker's Point in Kennebunkport, 100% property tax free for this reason.

Meanwhile I get double-digit property tax increases on my 3 BR home for years on end ...

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

9. They're taking in boarders
Actually, until their abrupt departure from the White House, Poppy and Bar never had a home in Texas. Their residence was a hotel. No one really knew exactly where they belonged. When asked by reporters where he was going, Poppy said he would build a house on a plot of land he owned in Houston. The plot was viewed as sort of small, but they did build a house on it, and that's where they live now, except for summers in Kennebunkport, which they didn't own until Poppy became Reagan's VP. Walker's Point had been in the family prior to that (the Walker side), . Almost like *'s buying that spread as a candidate.

Freepers still believe that the "ranch" is an old family homestead.
