On CNN crawler.....re Dept of Homeland Security:
It seems Dept of Homeland Security has postied a job opening for an "Entertainment Industry Coordinator". The job entails making certain that the Department is portrayed "accurately" in TV and Movie productions.

I don't know about you but my mind automatically links to words like:

censorship....propaganda....1984...repression....intimidation....

add your own......

7. We don't need that kind of thinking here on DU. Bush will lose as long
as the election is held, and it is a fair election. FAIR ELECTION! Honest, truthful, and every vote counted. And that should be the focus of every 'freedom loving' American in this country. Whether or not you're a dem or repub, the importance of this election transcends political parties.

This doomsday stuff is ridiculous. I'm listening to the stream of the New York protests and I can hear the voices of people who are not about to give up, roll over, and play dead. WBAI in New York City just had a representative of Code Pink talking about their movement. They're talking about the occupation of Haiti by the US and France. There are thousands in the streets, one guy said it's the biggest protect since Viet Nam. They were talking about the draft, and how that enaction of it would really mobilize the public.

Think what you want. But you're wrong.

14. You say one thing and then post that you weren't 'really' concerned
about it happening for real. Okay, then why did you say it in the first place?

I do not consider myself the 'moderator of thought' here. But the doom and gloom posts are ridiculous. Hell, why bother to try to elect a democratic president in the first place, since it's so obvious that the bush* admin has it all sewn up with dirty tricks and propaganda. Let's just give up since some people on this board have already declared a bush* victory. /as you say, end sarcasm.

13. Do the words
"Diebold" or "private voting software" or "no necessity for a paper trail verification of electronic votes" mean anything to you?

Makes me think of Stalin's old saying, "those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything!"

I never in a million years thought that would apply to my own country, but it appears it has and it does!

15. Key words are: "as long as the election is held."

THAT isn't a "Given" just yet and it ALL hinges on THAT.

4. corruption, abuse of power
The implict threat when a government agency starts telling broadcasters how to run their shows is:

If we don't like how our dept. is portrayed, we can call our associates at the FCC and ask them to find some technicality to avoid renewing your license.

5. also: waste of money, bad priorities
The Dept. of Homeland Security is supposed to be protecting us from terrorists, not protecting its own image.

Our tax dollars will go to pay the salary and benefits of someone who spends all day pressuring Hollywood to do a sacharine portrayal of that dept.

8. About the Purpose of Government
The Dept. of Homeland Security is supposed to be protecting us from terrorists, not protecting its own image.

I couldn't agree with you more, Eric. The purpose of government, very simply, is to protect the rights of its citizens. However, under this administration, the purpose of government has become protecting itself. See: 9/11 commission, Condi "advisors don't testify" Rice, Dick "Blackbox Energy Policy" Cheney, etc. etc. etc. Everytime I see something like that, I want to go shake some Freepers and scream in their faces, "Why aren't you all as pissed about this as we are?!?!?"

I particularly like the word influencing . I'll have to check The Official Republican Party Code Book for the exact meaning.
