Officials: Group tying self to blasts may not be real
By Bryan Bender
and Farah Stockman, Globe Staff, 3/13/2004

(snip)

Ben Venzke, CEO of IntelCenter, a private company that specializes in analyzing terrorist messages for government agencies, said that while he believes Al Qaeda could have been responsible for the Madrid bombings, messages from the purported brigade are not credible.

2. That's right

There have been plenty of proven conspiracies involving the U.S. government (Watergate? Iran-Contra?), so they shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.

3. Yikes!
Spain certainly has had its share of terroristic violence -- in recent centuries from within -- Basques, Andorrans, etc.

That it would be hit by "Al Qaeda" for supporting the war in Iraq is possible, but not likely.

If so, Al Qaeda is certainly thinking outside of the box these days.

I give it even odds: Al Qaeda hits Spain to punish them for not allowing Iraq to go from a secular dictatorship to an authoritarian Islamic state, by supporting the Americans -- OR "The Bay of Pigs thing" faction of our shadow government is trying very very very very hard to make Old Europe (or is Spain "New Europe"?) feel that it is facing the same enemy -- the VERY SAME enemy -- as America and Israel?

(BTW -- heard an offhanded remark -- think it was on CNN -- someone commenting that "historically, Spain had a 'Muslim problem' for many centuries before it expelled them.")

4. What if it turned out to be the ETA?
Would they call for another election? How would the voters feel?

5. If this was a Bush political ploy, it blew up in his face!
Maybe Americans will do the same thing this November.
