Howard Stern Declares Radio 'Jihad' Against Bush

--The raunchy jockey is mobilizing his army of listeners against Bush --
and they could make a difference in November.

Eric Boehlert, Salon, march 12, 2004

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2004/03/12/stern/index.html

Declaring a "radio jihad" against President Bush, syndicated morning man
Howard Stern and his burgeoning crusade to drive Republicans from the
White House are shaping up as a colossal media headache for the GOP, and
one they never saw coming.

The pioneering shock jock, "the man who launched the raunch," as the Los
Angeles Times once put it, has emerged almost overnight as the most
influential Bush critic in all of American broadcasting, as he rails
against the president hour after hour, day after day to a weekly
audience of 8 million listeners. Never before has a Republican president
come under such withering attack from a radio talk-show host with the
influence and national reach Stern has.

"The potential impact is huge," says Charles Goyette, talk-show host at
KFYI in Phoenix. "And it's not just with the 8 million people who tune
it, it's that he breaks the spell. Everybody's been enchanted by Bush,
that he's a great wartime leader and to criticize him is unpatriotic.
Now Stern pounds him every day and it shatters that illusion that the
man is invincible and he shouldn't be criticized."

"He's got one of the biggest audiences in all of radio, and perhaps the
most loyal," says Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers magazine, the
nonpartisan monthly that covers radio's news/talk industry. "And that's
why he's so dangerous for the White House."

5. Stern is no liberal.
He is just a fool who thought that he was safe. That the wingers wouldn't stab him in the back at the first point it became expedient.

He's a joke. If he were gone tomorrow I doubt there would be much trouble problem finding someone to replace him in his job of telling penis and fart jokes. We could just take my nephew to middle school one day. Plenty of qualified candidates there.

8. Right on, Tina
Seems to me he didn't see anything wrong with BushCo until his own ox was being gored. He didn't give a damn about our soldiers or the Iraqi people, just Howard, Howard, Howard. Any help he can give is great, but he's no hero.

Nothing bad has happened to me. I do care about other people, even if I'm not personally involved in something.

But I don't suppose my opinion of Sterm matters for anything. :)

But I am thrilled he has turned into a bu$h basher. Any help we can get on bringing that idiot down is fine with me. The only thing I am concerned about is stopping bu$h and his nazis from getting another 4 years to finish up their carnage on America.

Howard Stern voted for George H.W. Bush but DIDN'T support his re-election, so this isn't the first time he's decided he didn't like a Bush presidency only after experiencing it.

and has said so repeatedly...He voted for Gore but decided he'd give Bush a chance and the benefit of the doubt.

Oops, on edit I realized you meant Bush I originally....I don't remember if he voted for Bush I or not...I know he supported Clinton twice though...

17. The article says this --
"Anecdotally, those daily phone calls from listeners -- mostly men -- who tell Stern they usually don't vote, but this year they're definitely going to vote against Bush (and it's usually against, Bush not for Sen. John Kerry) cannot be comforting to the Bush/Cheney '04 strategists."

Which is interesting. I heard three men call Randi Rhodes yesterday and tell her they were Republicans who were going to vote for Kerry. We have also heard a lot of anecdotes like that here and I've heard a few on Cspan too that sounded real.

9. WOW--it says it all
This is indeed grown into a cancer eating off Bush's face and it's the only way to turn these dumb asses around in this country. I tell you, so many of these people would rather hear what a street walker has to say than a politician. I love the part about people being lulled for these years into these stupid false images of Bush. This is the awakening the right does not want. This is the antidote to Rush. Man, Howard, keep this going.

standing up for free speech. I don't care if he's late to the game and because of his own interests. I'll take it because it's perfect timing. :D

If he can pull the affluent white male vote away from the GOP teat, I'm all for it. It's the one demographic Dems have lost over the years.

I just wish I could listen. I was never a big fan but I'd love to hear this.

21. The way we live now: "how they feel is an acceptable way to feel"
Edited on Fri Mar-12-04 11:49 AM by enough
snip>

"Overnight, Stern's probably increased by an important percentage the amount of talk-radio airtime that is not right-wing," notes Martin Kaplan, associate dean of the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communications. "His show does make a difference in terms of media ecology and what's out there. It's letting people know how they feel is an acceptable way to feel. What the media do is put out a version of what's normal. And if all that's out there is Rush Limbaugh and Dittoheads, then centrists and progressives see themselves as the minority. But if you can hear voices on the airwaves that sound like the voice in your own head, you begin to realize it's a polarized, 50/50 nation."

snip>

I agree Stern's conversion or whatever is great news and will change the balance of power, probably drastically. He's probably just the first to realize that there's a whole universe of "new material" to be mined for profit here.

But this vision of America as a place where people need to find out from the media what they are allowed to think and feel is probably the scariest part of our current national existence. A population addicted to, absolutely CRAVING, brainwashing.

But I reserve the right to continue despising Stern and his fellow "shock jocks." The enemy of my enemy may be facing the same direction I am, but that doesn't make him my friend.

If I never see or hear Stern again I'd be a happy gal. And if he gets smacked around by the Bush administration, I'll weep for the first amendment, not for Howie.

(Just had to throw in one for the Stern-haters! :toast: )

27. This WILL make a difference in November
Edited on Fri Mar-12-04 01:00 PM by rocknation
because Howard reaches precisely the people we need to reach most.

As long as the mainstream media is in the Bush regime's pocket, Kerry is going to have an uphill battle--he just won't be able to get his message out the way Bush can. The closest thing we have to mainstream media access is The Daily Show, and that's only two hours a week. Of course things would be a lot easier if Kerry could pound out his message 24/7, too. But equally important, he needs to reach the apathetics, independents, undecideds and alienated but uncommitted Republican fence-sitters who would make the difference between a two- and twelve-point margin of victory.

Howard does EXACTLY that, and with our help, he can do it properly. Imagine him warning that a draft will be inevitable if Bush stays in office, complaining about the soliders not being properly equipped, or wondering if Cheney is still taking money from Halliburton. Imagine the rebuttal parody commericals he could run. Four hours of him chanting "Bush is a jerk...Bush is an idiot" isn't going to do it.

We must all help Howard with his jihad by sending along both our support and any information that will help. All appropriate Web sites, articles, and links should be e-mailed daily to [email protected] or http://www.krockradio.com/feedback (select "The Howard Stern Show" from the dropdown menu). We can keep him in fresh material right up through Election Day!

Stern is the FIRST MAJOR MEDIA PERSONALITY WITH THE F*CKING BALLS TO TAKE ON BUSH. There IS NO ONE ELSE with even a tiny fraction of his audience doing so.

That alone should get some measure of appreciation and respect.

Howard Stern's audience is largely young white men, many of whom have little interest in politics.

And believe me, they listen to Stern.

If he gets them riled up, Bush is simply toast.
