j. edgar hoover and his constant companion clyde tolson were homosexual lovers for decades, even though j. edgar was heavily closeted, and went out of his way to expose homosexuals as a political weapon. he harrassed many gay people with threats of outing them, and worse, yet all the while, he and Clyde remained together, like any other married couple. Clyde Tolson is even buried right next to Hoover, making them companions even in death.
and to this day, this fact is rarely mentioned. it's hard to seperate the lurid rumors with the actual facts of Hoover's sexuality,
it was rumored for years that the reason Hoover denied the very exsistence of the Mafia, was because they threatened HIM with exposure.
the existence of a 'compromising photo' in the Mafia's possession, was even talked about for years.
and one of Hoover's nastiest henchmen, Roy Cohn, was a closeted homosexual, who hounded and otherwise harrassed homosexuals like himself, whenever it was politically convenient. for decades, Hoover lived a lie, and in constant fear of being exposed, making him highly blackmailable.
but still, history barely mentions this contradiction in Hoover's life. and with all the recent focus on gay marriage, and a constitutional amendment banning it, we need to remember the strange tale of j. edgar and clyde. america's first right wing 'married' gay couple, who could never admit their love for one another, going to dinner and a movie, kissing goodnight and going to bed, while across town, Roy Cohn was digging up dirt on homosexuals under j. edgar's orders.
just goes to show you, they don't really give a damn about the issue of gay marriage up there in the white house, they are just using it as a convenient wedge issue, and as a fundraising and vote producing gimic. which is a really two-faced and hypocritical way to do things.
