Could Martha leave the country and seek asylum somewhere?
Did they take away her passport?

She has to have some millions stashed away somewhere offshore.

It might be more preferable for her to leave than spend a couple years rotting in jail.

1. <sigh>
She won't spend a couple years. It will be 6 months to a year at most, and most of that could be spent in house arrest. As it should be with no violent crimes.

7. Welcome to DU Vas Liz!
Martha will produce a multi-million dollar book based on her incarceration, whatever form it may take. I wish her God speed. O8)

2. Brazil. Do we have an extradition treaty with Brazil? The UK doesn't.
As for political asylum, this woman's guilty. She was convicted in a fair trial. She couldn't get asylum.

3. does it matter?
the name escapes me but wasn't some famous filmmaker convicted of molesting a thirteen year old girl and then high-tailed it out of this country to france to avoid jail time?

5. Roman Polanski skipped town to avoid the trial.
Edited on Sat Mar-06-04 01:26 PM by AP
He was only charged. He can't travel to the UK because he faces possible extradition.

I guess France won't extradite people to America based on arrest warrants (maybe for convictions -- I'll do some research).

11. France has traditionally
been a nation that does not extradite people.

12. I think they have an extradition treaty with the US, but it probably does
not allow for extradition based on arrest warrants for statutory rape, whereas the UK does.

And remember, Kissinger had to flee Paris because the courts there were considering respecting a Spanish (??) court's request for extradition based on on arrest warrant for war crimes.

13. Obviously there are exceptions
but if you look at history, France has quite a few noteworthy things regarding refusing to extradite.

6. She can find asylum at my house if she wants.
Christ knows, the joint could use a serious feng shui overhaul.

I can't compete with the woman's instincts for house stuff, but I still don't see that the evidence to convict her is overwhelming or beyond a doubt.

Plus, she's a Democrat.

8. I think you might be on to something there...
We could shuttle Martha from house to house keeping the feds away from her and in return she could provide decorating and cooking tips (gratis). I like it!

16. Comments like this make me think we Democrats are lost, and rightfuly so
"Plus she is a Democrat".

This is total crap. If we begin giving passes to people because they are Democrats, we are not worthy to hold the strings of government. You have absolutely no right to criticize any Republican that does the same.

Is this what we have become? Martha is an arrogant piece of dog dung who is getting what she so rightfully deserves. If anything she gives a bad name to us, and I really wish she was a Republican.

Do you realize some poor schmuck like me or you lost a fortune on the stock she sold. Sure it was only 50,000 compared to her hundreds of millions, but that 50,000 could have been the entire retirement account for a poor working sap. She is one of the lowliest pieces of self serving scum, and it is unfortunate she will only get 6 months. I am sick of the wealthy and connected taking advantage of the rest of us.

18. Cooperation Island
Sure, and if it OK for her to fly out of town, I guess you would have no problems with Ken Lay and all of his ENRON buddies going too. Lets not forget the people at MCI, there is a whole bunch more.

What is the old saying about the justice system, you get the justice you can afford. Well, I guess she did not pay enough for some good justice.

15. No, no
Once she puts this behind her, she runs for governor. Halfway through her second term she runs for president.

It's a Republican tradition that Dems would do well to emulate.
