1. Wow!
Amazing but true. At least this guy is coming out of this with what sounds like a very positive attitude. And he's got steadfast family around him to help.

2. I see no resemblance to 1984
The tales about Goldstein and his underground army, she said, were simply a lot of rubbish which the Party had invented for its own purposes and which you had to pretend to believe in. - from 1984
All that is needed is that a state of war should exist. - from 1984

Oh, well the price of freedom is ever vigilance; let’s hope the American people wake up.

6. That's funny
I said the same exact thing to my wife when I heard that story last night. If he had read Orwell, he'd fit right in.

7. This bit is hilarious...
Sorry to laugh, but did you see this part?:

"Over the past 19 years, the Wallis family would pick him up at the Stone County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and take him home or to family functions.

Zini said that probably aided in a gradual recovery that began with him reacting to a six-figure doctor's bill.

Eighteen years ago, Wallis shook his head violently when a doctor told the family that medical bills were running about $125,000 — as if to say the price was not acceptable, said his father, Jerry Wallis."

Doesn't that sound like an old gag -- the shock of a hefty medical bill causes a comatose patient to briefly snap out of his stupor? :)

8. on a serious note...
Was this guy technically in a coma? The article is vague and I have no medical background. They say he came out of his coma at one point but they don't say he went back in. If he was communicating with eye blinks, is that a true coma? And what does "stupor" indicate in medical terms?
