I was very amazed, and disappointed, when the election results were held up for 35 days in 2000. It seemed to me that Gore caved in, and lost his will to fight. And it also seemed that the Democratic party was made impotent and lethargic by the defeat to the Supreme Court nazis. Many of us were discouraged, burnt out, and depressed.
And after 9-11, many of us even began to support bush, more out of respect for the office, than for him personally. And our shock and awe filled in the gap normally occupied by our fighting side, and we settled in, and rallied, and supported America the best we knew how.
We even began to believe that bush was impenetrable and unstoppable. Bullets bounced off him, nothing could stop him. It was only in the last few months that the press and the liberals have seemed to come alive again, with a renewed verve. What the hell took so long? We are still shaking off the horror and fear of the Twin Tower attacks. And we are just now beginning to see through the republican induced fog.
Now, that 20,000 have died in Afghanistan and Iraq, now that 600 U.S. soldiers have died, and now that thousands more have been crippled for life, now we begin to snap out of our stupor.
We need to face the very real possibility that bush gets a second term. I didn't say elected, or re-elected, I said 'gets a second term'. I'm sure all the details are being worked out, and they have some surprises up their sleeves, and despite the sunny scenarios suggested by some, it could easily happen again. It was so easy the first time in 2000.
So, would 4 more years of this shit motivate us into real, concrete action? Would be become so angry and focused that we'd roll up our sleeves and storm the Bastille? Revolution? Civil Unrest? Too radical to contemplate? Yeah, maybe we should try to appease our confused right wing brothers and sisters more. Maybe things will be o.k. under a second bush term. Then, Jeb could take an 8 year ride too.
I suspect that the right wing perceives us as idiots, and basically neutered zombies, who bark a lot, raise a little hell, and then go home with our tails between our legs. We need more anger. We need to retain our standards, and our liberal ideals, but we need to grow muscular and resolved to throw back every stone that is thrown at us. If we don't get rid of these men THIS NOVEMBER, we wont' get rid of them for decades, because right now, they are more powerful than ever. And they don't want to give up that power, and that makes them dangerous. And that means that we are all threatened and we should all steel ourselves for a very rough road ahead.
