1. It seems, according to this poll...
that we are just as desensitized as the population at large by this crap.

I just hate it with a passion.

Not sure how you can conclude "we're as desensitized as the rest of the population" from the few results of this very selectively worded poll. Actually, it seems to me that such videos might be useful if they can wake people up to the fact that deadly force is used much more often and more capriciously than we think.

4. I don't think most viewers think while watching it
They just sit dazed taking it in as entertainment, blood pressure rising ever so slightly because the mayhem and death is REAL and LIVE.

If such videos were shown interspersed with discussions about law enforcement, in the context of a dialogue, they could be illustrative, but that is NEVER the case, they just run the hideous feed with the hairsprayed news jocks giving excited play-by-play commentary.

6. You could be right
I live in Japan, which, as you know, has very little violence on TV. They have their occasional COPS-like show, but you never see the cops busting heads or using deadly force. I guess I based my opinion on the fact that if such an event were shown live on Japanese TV, there would be a lot of soul-searching and the talk shows would be discussing it for days.

5. other: scaremongering as a means of control of the population.
ie trying to create circumstances where a law for a complete ban on citizen ownerschip of firearms might get past. creating mutual distrust within the population in order to prevent solidarity (that's what 'individualism' is for as well).
