I can't curse in this post, but just imagine anything you would like to here: $#@*&$^$#$*( $#@*&$^$#$*( $#@*&$^$#$*(

I knew he was going to do this, I have no other reason to respect anything he has ever done, or think that he would ever do anything but the most negative, cynical thing possible. Yet, irrationally, I feel absolutely flattened by him actually coming out supporting such an incredibly bigoted propostion. My heart has been beating fast, I've been hyperventilating, I can't eat my lunch (I ALWAYS eat lunch).

Listening to Scottie talk about * and respecting all people is upsetting me incredibly. Why does this feel so bad, when I knew it was going to happen?

4. I'm not even that terribly worried that it will pass
I think it is possible, but unlikely. I think that most people will realize how outrageously unfair it would be, but nonetheless, I am having an incredibly bad reaction to the person who is called President supporting this crap.

Or maybe I am that worried, maybe somehow I really do believe that they will bring the Republic of Gilead to the US.

9. If bush gets to seat a coupla justices like Starr and Ashcroft..
he won't need a constitutional amendment. He would then let the matter proceed to the Supreme Court and let it be outlawed there.

The reason bush wants an amendment now is because he knows that banning same sex marraiges would not survive a constitutional challenge.

So for all those who don't think presidential elections are important and that there is no difference between the parties, this issue illustrates how wrong you are.

2. Sure you can curse. It's fucked up.
I'm astounded that we're considering a constitutional ban on gay marriage when the real erosion of marriage is due to massive divorce rates and money problems.

I can only hope that this gets fillibustered by some brave people or doesn't get the necessary 2/3 vote to pass.

5. Can't curse in the top post, or it will be pulled, per GD rules
and truthfully, there really aren't curse words that could possibly express the depth of outrage and anger that I am feeling. Try this :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke:

8. Try THIS, then:
See my brand new signature line! DO IT! I used it to call Dianne Feinstein this morning about this very thing, to be told by her staffer that she was already against such an amendment. YES!

Anyway, try what it says in my signature line. I'm so proud of it. I'm equally thrilled that I actually did something technical and it worked!

3. calm down. amendments never get passed
it's all just a big distraction. Bush can't run on his record, so he's throwing this out there, knowing the media will eat it up.

It's not worth getting worked up about. If anything, it will backfire.

6. yes.. remember the intense efforts to pass the Equal Rights Amendment?
Many on DU, do remember... Despite our best efforts, that was never passed and that would have extended equal rights-- not attempt to take them away. Try not to be too demoralized my colleagues. As a heterosexual single professional (feminazi) female, I know a think or two about the bigotry coming from the RW. Hang tough and stand together.

7. yeah, 51% of the populations female and that couldn't get passed
this amendment is the least of our worries.

The distraction it's causing should be one of the biggest.

This is the truth that will hang Bush, right here:

13. Probably what everyone thought when Article 18 came up for a vote..
But...I don't see how Chimp and his thugs would ever get a 2/3 vote on this. Banning booze is one thing, pure out and out discrimination is quite another.

10. kayell, I'm with ya.
I knew it was coming, but it churns my stomach to hear that the fool who claims the title of President of MY country proposes to change the precious Constitution to discriminate against my fellow citizens.

I am straight, but for me this isn't a sexual issue...it's a human issue. How DARE he try to legitimize bigotry and hate with a constitutional amendment?

11. Thanks, I am so glad someone else is responding like this
It may not be rational, but it is awfully nice to know that someone else isn't feeling especially rational about it either. I feel like I've just been slapped by that SOB.

For whatever lucky reason, I have rarely if ever had anti-gay bigotry directly personally at ME. This of course wasn't either, especially as I am not in close relationship now, but it FELT personal this time.

And yes, HOW DARE HE EVEN TRY TO DO THIS TO THE CONSTITUTION. damn, breath, breath....

12. Has any other president supported an amendment that reduces our
freedoms? Are there any amendments to the constitution that takes way the rights of any segment of society?
