Poll question: What's the most pressing issue facing the human population currently???
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 09:14 PM by northwest
In your opinion: What issue that may or already does contribute to human death and suffering, needs to be taken care of at highest priority??? In other words, what do we (as humans) need to fix FIRST???

1. overpopulation
almost everything else derives from that.

3. I agree.
At LEAST most of our problems (except asteroid impacts, perhaps) stem from that problem.

5. Yup
Nothing else even comes close as a real problem. Address overpopulation and and many of the other problems can be taken care of at the same time.

8. AIDS would go under diseases.
Malnutrition would go under hunger/starvation.

The others would be results of overpopulation.

11. Yep...
and I would argue 4 is heavily affected by it.

The real sad part is that there is NO national discussion about overpopulation. Everything else we argue about is just skirting the edges of the real issue.

We can end poverty in a generation. There is no will to do so.

10. Hunger/starvation of course
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 09:28 PM by nu_duer
Maybe you address this along with addressing overpopulation, but the suffering of those already here must be tended to asap.

Doctors often assign priority to a symptom, a fever, for example, while treating the root cause is often a longer-term endeavor.

Surely we would feed a starving mother and children before eductating her/them on birth control.

For anyone of our species to suffer and die due to lack of food, as we toss what bits of big macs and super sized fries our gluttony just can't accomodate into the trash is, is - words fail.

Population should be managed and controlled, this is vital, but the first priority, imho, would be to cease the suffering of those already born.

20. SOme say there is no such thing as overpopulation...
Or when I made a peep of it a few months ago...

Oh well.

Depletion of oil. Corporate and lack of concern for their country and fellow Americans. The breakdown of communities and increase of isolationism and the idea "self-reliance" both nationally and as a nation of people (which is ironic, America - which is corporate america - relies on the rest of the world to remain afloat; not a very bright action for a 'superpower' to take...) Corrupt politicians who'd rather help their corproate special interests than the people (ala stadiums at taxpayer expense despite the fees and revenues the sports teams make while people go homeless and hungry, amongst enough other issues to make God, Jesus, Allah, and Smurfette cry for 40 days and 40 nights...)

I could go on, but I've said plenty.

If we don't have cheap oil and don't change to alternative energies or conserve what we have, we are done.

28. I picked war
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 10:39 PM by camero
I don't think there really is the problem of overpopulation as much as people think except for India and China. The main problem is that there is not enough equality in the ownership of land. There are alot of wide open spaces just not enough arable land.

With the demographics the way they are in the developed countries we could even be concerned about depopulation. In some countries the birth rate has not kept pace with the death rate.

Economic and real war has a major affect on this.

I wonder, I think the biggest current threat to the world is the US citizenry's apathy toward issues. Those who do care, vigorously defend their right to hording and the new religion, Capitalism.
