ACT to allow gay couples to adopt

http://www.abc.net.au/news/australia/act/200402/s1041977.htm

ACT (Australian Capital Territory) Chief Minister Jon Stanhope says it is part of a broader agenda to remove sexual discrimination from every government statute.

While acknowledging protests from the Christian lobby, Mr Stanhope says the interests of the child will remain paramount in any adoption decision.

But the Opposition's Bill Stefaniak says the Government is engaging in social engineering.

That "social engineering" charge always makes me laugh - why is it social engineering to allow certain people to marry/adopt etc but it isn't social engineering to BAN them from it?

4. to be completely honest
the proportion socially progressive people is probably higher in ACT than other parts of Australia - the only thing that's there is the Federal Government and consequently most of the people who live there are very well educated and I've found that education seems to atleast dull the bigotry a bit even in the most conservative of folks.

Dont think we'll see this headline emanating from FNQ (Far North Queensland) anytime soon - but every little step I s'pose
