6. The good thing is that this sort of opinion is irreversible

Once you decide that someone can't be trusted, there's almost nothing they can say or do that you won't look at with a jaundiced eye.

That's why trust is so hard to restore once lost, or at the very least requires major acts of repentence, along with forfeit of the proceeds of having acted badly. A dozen red roses just won't cut it.

Loss of trust snowballs on itself and even functions retroactively, casting past actions into suspicion as well. Once Bush loses the nation's trust, he ain't never gonna get it back.

... once you lose your credibility - it is all over. And in Bush's case it cost so much - 100s of lives, thousands of life changing injuries, a debt big enough to swallow our future and the credibility of the U.S. Saw Mark Shields on the Jim Lehrer NewsHour and he was making this point very well.
