Former Senator Torricelli is a Harken Energy representative
Edited on Sat Jan-31-04 05:14 AM by arcos
As you may know, a few months ago Harken Energy sued the government of Costa Rica for $57 billion because of a failed oil exploration contract. In the 90's, Harken was given four "blocks" of land and sea to look for oil. After a lot of local opposition and a Supreme Court ruling, the oil contract was cancelled.

Because of these, Harken decided to sue Costa Rica in US courts. A few monts later they withdrew the lawsuit and decided to negotiate. Well, a couple of days ago a Costa Rican newspaper reported that former Senator Bob Torricelli (D-NJ), came to Costa Rica as a Harken Energy representative to meet with CR's Environment Minister.

One of the proposals was to "freeze" the contract and wait until a new government is elected in 2006 to decide whether or not to continue with the project. It was cancelled because of the opposition of environmentalist groups and local tourist bureaus who were concerned of the great environmental damage that oil companies could cause.

And now, a former Democratic Senator comes to defend the company's interests. I know Torricelli was never a great example of liberal or Democratic principles, but it is really sad and discouraging when you think about it.

I was surprised and shocked, because I usually expect more from Democrats than Republicans. I am certainly happy Torricelli is gone from the Senate!

I myself am glad he's outta the senate. He was a very scummy DINO. He was the first to call on Gore to concede. Not to mention he was EXTREMELY corrupt.

Fuck him. I would expect nothing more from him.

2. The worst, the lowest. Good riddance.
What an @$$####.

(snip) Noted American author, Mark Twain, once observed that, “It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress.” And the latest Democratic charade attempting an eleventh hour withdrawal of Robert “Torch” Torricelli’s Senate candidacy further reaffirms this belief.

Before delving into the specifics of this murky ethical cesspool, it might help the reader to know that as of the year 2000, the composition of America’s Congress contained the following distinguished individuals:

  1. 29 members of Congress have been accused of spousal abuse.

  2. 7 have been arrested for fraud.

  3. 19 have been accused of writing bad checks.

  4. 117 have bankrupted at least two businesses.

  5. 3 have been arrested for assault.

  6. 71 have credit reports so bad they can't qualify for a credit card.

  7. 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges.

  8. 8 have been arrested for shoplifting.

  9. 21 are current defendants in lawsuits.

  10. And in 1998 alone, 84 were stopped for drunk driving, but released after they claimed Congressional immunity.

6. Torricelli was always a champion of...
New Jersey Democratic principles:

Grab what you can.

Destroy your enemies.

Try not to get caught.

New Jersey Republican principles aren't much different, but they're not quite as good at it.

The Torch is now making a good living at doing at what he always did best.

9. my experience with Torricelli
I work with a lot of grassroots action groups in NJ and had plenty of contact and experience with Torricelli. His staff people were always very courteous and appeared to be very interested in what we were seeking to do.

But when it came to decision time, it was like Torricelli was schizophrenic. He would vote or support our positions some of the time and then turn right around on other issues and vote another way.

I could only come to the conclusion he was trying to please all the people all the time and, of course, that just can't work.
