22. The story is just more ganjaganda and a lie
There was a long thread on this at cannabisnews.com and the story is that the guy died of DT's or withdrawal from alcohol. There was no autopsy saying that and cannabis toxicity is a joke. You would pass out long before your life would be threatened. See http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread18175.shtml

The fact that he was high might not have had any effect. He could have had a stroke or something like that.

20. The BBC version
I made this comment about the BBC version of this story at http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread18181.shtml#2

Highly political and human health is not relevant

They sure seem to be concerned about the political arena. It is almost as if the pill companies are the sun they revolve around.
They can put up accurate information on their website. They can put brochures out at health care facilities and doctors offices. They can educate doctors on the alternative delivery systems that reduce what little harm smoking a joint every day would do.

If they want to step into the area in which the criminal justice affects the health of those victimized by the the unjust laws, I wish they would. The laws put people in contact with a black market representative. The black market imposes a big cost in the form of extortion/robbery because someone wants the benefits of the Miracle Plant experience. Being poor jeopardizes a person's health. The negative self-image and fear of arrest and its consequences cannot be good on health.

Hepatitis and AIDS might be a result of the criminal justice treatment of something that is not even a real problem to people's health. Go ahead BMA and help the health problems that come with consuming cannabis.

But you know, there is one group in society that really needs help. That would be those in need of help with mental illness. Of course the prison industry has a way of saying they can do that too. The wrong priorities inflict harm on one group that should be free under the principle they inflict no harm on no one else. The laws inflict harm and they do not arrest the ones that make the horrible laws that defy freedom. Then in a sin of omission, they inflict harm on the mentally ill claiming their is not enough tax money.

The BMA does not talk sense.

27. What bullshit...study after study and my own personal study from
Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 05:03 PM by BackDoorMan
32 years of smoking my facvorite organic pot and then getting bored with pot and having a occasional joint now and then, to enjoying every day, to not wanting to smoke it for month's to enjoying it again while watching a movie or listening to music...and knowing people have have smoked pot for over 40 years...

Pot is the ONLY drug that is NOT physically addicting. And that includes tobacco, caffeine, alcohol, pharmaceutical drugs, street drugs, etc...

Medical studies after medical studies confirm this...there's ALWAYS going to be some asshole saying differently, for profit motive, hating people who smoke pot, wanting the headlines, don't like pot because it's an enlightening drug (heavens can't have that) as opposed to alcohol which knocks one out, looking sloppy as a pig.

I've NEVER seen anyone lying in the street/gutter begging for a joint...But I've have seen many begging and lying in the gutter begging for a drink, or so sick on hard street drugs and even sick on pharmaceuticals!!! But never pot, have you?

'Brother, can you spare a dime for a cup of coffee? Hey, do you have an extra cigarette?'

Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 05:30 PM by foo_bar
British media, senior police chiefs and the United Nations have criticised the reclassification, saying it will lead to widespread confusion.

I'm glad the UN is tackling this issue of global importance. I've heard of people keeping their reefer in those UNICEF collection boxes.

31. The UN...
also wants to criminalize any ad campaigns or platforms that promote decriminalization or legalization under the auspices that it may cause "confusion" and blur the anti-drug message.

Once again, the world and national body politic has shown that our bodies are not our own and that we are evidently not intelligent enough to make the distinction between what's good for us and what's not.

34. More than spin, desperation...
The british conservatives have pulled out all stops to block the decrmininalization of cannabis coming at the end of january. Every day, there is a new article about psychosis, and quack doctors claiming one thing or another about the evil weed... its like reefer tabloid madness... and they grasp at anything they can to demonize it to perhaps cause the goveernment to move with tabloid thinking.

All the while, they are assholes. :)

The refuse to accept the "harm minimization" view that legalization actually reduces the harm done by drugs to people, by making sure supplies are pure, of known quantities and by ensuring that those who do experiment with drugs are not criminalized and screwed up by taxpayers beyond the drugs themselves. As it stands, the vast majority of the damage from drugs is actually from the criminal system that makes drugs users go to prison, blocking them from jobs and productive employment, and all sorts of asinine behaviours to force drugs users in to a permanent slave underclass.

I'm for a slave revolt. I AM SPARTACUS. :)

33. This probably isn't really about people smoking pot
it's probably more about making sure it's never used industrially since it is mighty powerful. No need for logging, paper and composites are actually easier and cleaner with hemp. Then textiles, plastics and even oil. Go figure they don't wan't to give it a shot.

Here's a great source on the history of it: http://www.jackherer.com/

supposedly died from it - or so I read - but that's an isolated incident, if true. I believe inhaling smoke of any kind to be an irritant, and a carcinogen, but who smokes anywhere near the amount of pot that people smoke cigarettes? If someone were to smoke the equivalent of one or two packs a day - every day - that person would have a good chance of getting cancer. Beats the hell out of dying for Philip Morris bottom line, I suppose.

36. finding that elusive control
i'm amazed how medical scientists will put their reputations on the line given the statistical margins of error with a drug with unknown variations in the sample population.

Also, as many cannabis smokers also smoke tobacco, the effects cannot be separated. Almost all the UK cannabis smokers i know mix the weed with tobacco in a rolled tobaccco cigarrette.

Then add the food and lifestyle differences amongst drugs users and the quality of statistics when saying you smoke grass is admitting to a crime (and in the UK, there is no 5th amendment, so lying is advisable, as you can be put in prison for incriminating yourself).. and since currently cannabis is a custodial crime... all these factors lead to a margin of error too wide... but mostly, IMO, due to the differences between unknown cannabis plants, origins, and the 100+ active chemical mix that is "cannabis" as THC is but a single part of the greater mix.

These medical people who say this are crap scientists and quacks... just like republicans (but in fact, they are UK republicans, so no suprises there)

39. It doesn't kill
The Costa Rican and Jamacian drug studies sighted in Jack Herer's The Emporor Wears No Clothes states that cannabis users actually live longer than non users when all other things are equal.
Even if this one man did die from marijuana, the first death from such in 10,000 years, I think that no user, especially one not attempting to go for any kind of marijuana ingestion record, needs to be concerned about this.
You have much more to fear when you are perscribed a new medicine for you and take it as directed. Unfortunately, most drugs have killed someone at some point. Medicines for non life threatening, non debilitating conditions continue to be sold even if they have killed a few people. Alcohol kills many people and continues to be sold as well.
