Shuckin' and Jivin' at the SOTU Ball
I don't get it. I just don't.
Why were all the Democrats smiling and laughing and reaching out to the chimp* to clap him on the shoulder, shake his hand, even hold a baby up for him to fawn over (Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr.)? Years from now will he tell his teen-age daughter "Honey, I just wanted you to have the high honor of being slobbered over by the worst man to ever occupy the White House."?
I do not understand.

OK, Teddy didn't smile when he applauded. What courage!
This is the same guy who, in two speeches in recent days, EXCORCIATED bush* for his phony war. There he is, tight-jawed, but applauding.

I don't want to hear about "honoring the OFFICE", or "it's just politics, that's the way the game is played".
Don't tell me that.

What I wanted to see, from the deepest fiber of my being, was every Democrat sitting there in stony silence, hands folded in laps.
"Oh, they couldn't do that. Time honored tradition. The right wing media would have a field day. Blah-blah-blah."
Let 'em HAVE a field day. They ain't cutting us any slack anyway.

Here's what I say.
I say BULL-SHIT!
I don't think I've ever been this disappointed in my party's representatives.
I'll still vote against each and every repug, at each and every opportunity, but I sure ain't happy about last night's performance.
Buncha damn gutless wonders.
:grr:

1. It was so disgusting, wasn't it?
I also felt ashamed of our party. The only bright spot was when Bush mentioned that the Patriot Act would expire next year and all the Democrats clapped. That was a good moment.

2. Yeah
I found it pitiful how they all applauded. I wish that they would have just done as you said: sat down and done nothing.

3. Now I'm REALLY glad I didn't watch.
I'd have been respectful if I was there. I wouldn't have screamed "BULLSHIT" at the top of my lungs every time * lied. I'd have just sat there, with a disapproving frown on my face. I'd have stood when * entered and when he left, but that's all the deference he is allowed.

5. Now that I think about it...
I'd have just stayed home and watched a movie.
Think of the impact of an empty side of the house.

4. That's it in a nut shell
The Dems are part of the problem too. Dems now are just Republican light.

Few exceptions like DK not voting for the war.

Kerry and Edwards both voted FOR the Patiot Act. But now they tell us they are different than Bush.

Look at the voting record of some of the Dems don't seem like Dems at all.

6. Don't know about the baby slobberin' but...
I think the applause is out of respect for the office and out of decorum...certainly not for the man. I actually think the Dems showed a lot more chutzpah than they usually do. The best was the applause for the expiration of the Patriot Act...not exactly what shrub was going for there!...As for the baby...maybe he was hoping the little tyke would lose his dinner all over shrubby...now THAT would be something to tell the kid about in the future:D

7. Take heart
When I watched the speech on TV last night I was
heartened by the Democratic reaction to *

I could sense a deeply divided house as half
of the room sat like stones.
The decorum of the event has been maintained for the sake of tradition.
You can't expect any member of the assembled house to yell out insults or boo during a SOTU speech. Hearty applause to every point made in the speech is the expected response.

I thought the Dem protest was very effective.

8. They should have walked out!
This was a campaign speech. Nothing more. I can't remember another President giving 3 SOTU speeches in 1 term.

He said nothing of substance. And he's on the wrong side of every issue he talked about.
