Conrad M. Black, the embattled media baron, has one more overdue bill: he has not made good on a $100,000 pledge to the New York Public Library.

Lord Black and his wife, Barbara Amiel Black, were co-chairmen of the Literary Lions benefit dinner on Nov. 3. At that time, he agreed to give the library $100,000, but he has not made the contribution.

Instead, Lord Black asked his company, Hollinger International, to make the payment for him. The company refused, according to a person briefed on the situation. Nor did Hollinger take a table at the elegant New York dinner, which was attended by some of New York's top socialites.

Hollinger International chairman Conrad Black has put his Palm Beach, Florida, oceanside mansion up for sale at $US36 million ($47 million).

This follows news earlier this week that the media baron was asking pound stg. 14million ($33 million) for his four-storey London mansion, formerly owned by Alan Bond.

The Florida mansion has six bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a lift, three-car garage, marble floors, movie theatre, two-story guesthouse and swimming pool, according to tax records, the Multiple Listing Service and the listing agent's brochure.

Lord Black, under investigation by US and Canadian securities regulators, is trying to sell the real estate he amassed while building Hollinger into the world's third largest chain of English-language papers.

Meanwhile, Hollinger International director Richard Perle said yesterday that the company had neglected its role as a public company by ignoring shareholders who complained that Lord Black was overpaid, fuelling the discontent that led to his resignation as chief executive last year.
