Today's news on the draft
News on the Draft Issue

Today's updates:

Casualties of war - truth http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/newssentinel/news/editorial/10617284.htm Also on Tuesday, in a not completely unrelated event, someone in the Army's chain of command ordered Maj. Michael Cohen to shut down his Weblog, 67cshdocs.com http://www.67cshdocs.com. Maj. Cohen, who grew up in Bucks County, Pa., is the chief emergency surgeon at the 67th Combat Support Hospital at Forward Operating Base Marez, south of Mosul in Northern Iraq.

Why I Refused a 2nd Deployment to Iraq http://www.67cshdocs.com Note from editor: I received an email a few moments ago from wife Monica. In it she has told me a total of 22 people in Sgt Benderman’s unit have refused to deploy to Iraq. 17 have gone AWOL and 2 have attempted suicide. The status of the remaining 3 is unknown at this time. We at the POAC fully support the decision to refuse deployment to Iraq which has been made by Sgt Benderman, and the others in his unit.

Army reserves under stress http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~417~2644309,00.html A startling characterization of the deteriorating situation has come from a three-star commander in a memo up the chain of command that warns of pressures are so significant that the Army Reserve "is rapidly degenerating into a 'broken' force."

AN ARMY OF ONE? http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1015898,00.html Erick Davis, 24, was the sole enlistee at a ceremony last week at a National Guard recruiting center in Alexandria, Va. His wife Shawnique watched

War on the cheap http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/editorial/2988518 For active-duty military, and mobilized reserve and National Guard units, Iraq is fast becoming a conflict more punishing than Vietnam or Korea.

Congresswoman questions Guard, Reserve deployments http://www.wrn.com/gestalt/go.cfm?objectid=5F6F8A9E-ADC7-4F67-9FCA5762A68EEEA7&dbtranslator=local.cfm Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin says increasing reliance on Guard and Reserve troops in Iraq is unfair and inappropriate. "Unfair." as the word the Madison Democrat initially used, talking about the large numbers of National Guard and Reserve troops serving in the Bush administration's war in Iraq.

Will we have to re-institute the draft? http://www.cheboygannews.com/articles/2005/01/10/news/opinion/opinion2.txt Mention the word "draft" in terms of the military and it is certain to cause discomfort for men of my age. The military draft was something that was viewed with a mixture of fear and anger. In fact, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1973 to "dodge" the draft. I knew I was not going to college, I had just turned 18 and was required to register for the draft, and the threat of being sent to Southeast Asia was still very much a reality. I figured my chances were better in the Navy than pounding ground somewhere with the U.S. Army.
