Eric Margolis (Toronto Sun): Yankees are blind to blundering Bush
Why do so many Americans still support George W. Bush after all those damning revelations about Iraq? That's the question I'm invariably asked when abroad.

Former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, in his superb, must-read new book, Where the Right Went Wrong, provides some answers.

"In 2003," he writes, "the U.S. invaded a country that did not threaten us, had not attacked us and did not want war with us, to disarm it of weapons we have since discovered it did not have."

White House assurances that U.S. troops would be greeted in Iraq with flowers were as laughable as its pledges Mideast peace and democracy would ensue.

Chief U.S. arms inspector Charles Duelfer's recent, 960-page report contradicted almost every Bush administration prewar claim about Iraq, which were used to justify an illegal war that has killed 20,000 Iraqis and more than 1,000 Americans, caused 14,000 U.S. casualties and will soon have cost $200 billion US -- when Washington can't even supply flu vaccine.

1. If you want an answer, go to an American Church
and see how the Nazi Party has totally infiltrated Christianity. All you will hear is a lot of Republican propaganda mixed with thier special version of Xtianity which is 1% bullshit about Jesus and 99 % Ayn Rand "SCREW THY NEIGHBOR" shit!

2. with all due respect to Mr. Margolis
the word YANKEES in the title needs to be changed to REPUBLICANS, and also, Bush did not win the last election.

3. I agree Skittles
but remember that Eric himself is a Yankee ex-patriot living in Canada.

4. that word seems to mean different things in different places
I spent the last two weeks in South Carolina & I doubt that they consider themselves "Yankees"... Hell, where I am in Wisconsin, which is largely populated by the descendents of immigrants who settled here from 1870-1920, Yankees are New Englanders... We don't think of ourselves as Yankees.

5. Yankee Imperialist go home is how it's meant
Maybe we should tell the foreigners to say "Red state Imperialist go home."

7. when I was a child in England
"Yankee" was sometimes considered derogatory, which I did't understand because the US military papers I read routinely referred to themselves as "yanks".

6. unfortunately, all Americans are Yanks... foreigners don't give a shit...
...it you're from South Boston or South Carolina. And quite frankly, I'm just as amazed as they are. $hrubco, the neocons and their fanatical religious base are so off-kilter it could be laughable if it were not so freakin' tragic. We are so coddled, and spoon-fed information to keep us docile and manageable. The rest of the world doesn't have the ministry of propaganda to think for them, so they're confused and concerned. Why won't normally rational Yanks wake up and smell the proverbial coffee?
